Chapter 6

2nd September, 1991

I woke up to someone shaking me and telling me to get up.

"Mimi?" I muttered vaguely. "I had a funny dream..."

"Jade! Wake up! We need to have breakfast!" I opened my eyes to see Millicent, Pansy, Evangeline and Anja -the other first-year Slytherins - staring down at me.

"Uuuurgh... Wait, did you say breakfast?" I was suddenly awake.

"Yes, we did! Now let's go!" Anja exclaimed, tugging my arm.

Before long, I was ready, so we headed to the Great Hall. Mllicent and Pansy went off to go find Draco, Crabbe and Goyle. Anja went to go sit with some second-years.

I went to go sit with Blaise. "We've got Potions first, with Gryffindors," I told Blaise.

Nodding, he got his breakfast.

Once we'd eaten, we headed off to class. The other Slytherins were already there, and Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville (another Gryffindor) were talking, thought it was obvious that Harry and Ron couldn't abide her.

We headed over to where Dean and Pavarti were standing with Seamus and Lavender.

However, I had barely gotten out a "Hi" when Professor Snape walked up and opened the door.

He was our first teacher?

"Good morning," he said icily, as soon as we'd sat down.

He then called the roll. When he got to my name he gave me a fleeting smile before continuing.

At Harry's name he asked him heaps of questions that Harry couldn't answer.

I wasn't really paying that much attention, though, because, well, it was Harry.

Anyway, when Professor Snape finished marking the roll, he got us to make a potion. I, somehow, made the best one in the class, earning Slytherin 15 points. Draco came second, earning us 10.

Harry's, unsurprisingly, was terrible.

After the lesson, Professor Snape asked me to stay behind.

Confused, I did as I was asked, Blaise shooting me an equally confused look before following everyone else out the door.

He walked over to me. "Jade!" he barked.

Had I done something wrong?

"Y-yes, sir?" I stuttered.

"What is Asphodel?" he questioned.

"A type of lily, isn't it?" I replied. He stiffened at the word 'Lily' for some reason, but nodded. He didn't look so imposing anymore, either.

"Yes. Jade, do you know anything about Nicolas Flamel?"

I nodded, trying to recall information. "Yeah, wasn't he the guy who lived forever? Discovered the Philosopher's Stone, or something? And according to the Chocolate Frog Cards, he works with Professor Dumbledore."

He nodded. "That is correct. Have you read the Daily Prophet?"

I shook my head. "No, sir."

"Well, please do so. Goodbye, Jade Ev - I mean, Edwards."

When I got to Herbology, I explained to Professor Sprout, the teacher, why I had been late, then went over to Blaise, Alex and Padma. "Hi," I said.

I then explained why Professor Snape had kept me back after Blaise's insistent question.

Alex and Padma told us about Defense Against the Dark Arts. Apparently the teacher wearing a turban was Professor Quirrell, and he acted as if he was terrified of everything.

I wasn't surprised. The name 'Quirrell' even sounds nervous.

We didn't get much work done in Herbology.

At break, we were joined by Lavender and Seamus as well as the group that had sat together on the train.

Next, Blaise and I had Defense Against the Dark Arts with the Hufflepuffs and the others had Charms.

As we had found out, Alex and Padma were right about Quirrell - he stuttered constantly, especially with words relating to Slytherin House.

It was irritating.

"G-good morning, st-st-st-st-st-st-st-students," he stuttered nervously.

When he was finally finished with the roll, we learnt about vampires.

Or should I say, 'v-v-vamp-p-p-pires'.

Charms and Transfiguration were a lot more interesting.

But our first flying lesson would have to be the most exciting of them all.
