Stomach Strengthening Solution

Chapter 3

Stomach Strengthening
Solution

Estimated Brewing Time:
Pewter cauldron: 120 minutes
Brass cauldron: 108 minutes
Copper cauldron: 99 minutes

Ingredients:
One (1) liter water
Thirty (30) ml salamander blood1
One (1) medium sized ginger root1
Three (3) agrimony leaves1
Two (2) lionfish spines2
Two (2) sprigs of lavender3
Thirty (30) ml syrup of hellebore2

Instructions:

Part One:

  1. Bring 500 ml of water to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  2. Take the ginger root and cut it widthwise on your cutting board with a sharp knife. The sections should be about 0.75 cm (a little more than 0.25 inches) in width.

  3. Add 15 ml salamander blood to the cauldron.

  4. Add all of the sliced ginger root to the cauldron.

  5. Add two agrimony leaves to the cauldron.

  6. Bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for 15 seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  7. Stir once counter-clockwise.

  8. Leave potion to brew in your pewter cauldron for 25 minutes (this would be 22 minutes in a brass cauldron and twenty minutes in a copper cauldron).

At this point, the potion will appear a fiery red in color and the steam produced will likely be a bit yellow in hue.

Part Two:

  1. Add two lionfish spines to the cauldron.

  2. Add 15 ml salamander’s blood to the cauldron. Caution: At this point, the potion will turn a bright orange and may begin “spitting” quite a bit. This is entirely natural. Ensure that you stay out of the way, as large, purple welts will rise up wherever the potion touches. You MUST wait for the “spitting” to subside completely before continuing and raising the heat. Otherwise, the potion will likely brew incorrectly, and may cause unintended side effects.

  3. Once the “spitting” subsides, bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for twenty seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  4. Add remaining agrimony leaf to the cauldron.

  5. Leave potion to brew in your pewter cauldron for 35 minutes (this would be 31 minutes in a brass cauldron and 28 minutes in a copper cauldron.)

The potion will now be a pale orange in hue and the steam will be a sulfur yellow in color.

Part Three:

  1. Add remaining 500 ml of water to the cauldron.

  2. Add two sprigs of lavender to the cauldron.

  3. Add thirty ml of hellebore to the cauldron.

  4. Stir twice clockwise.

  5. Bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for thirty seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  6. Leave potion to brew in your pewter cauldron for fifty minutes (this would be 45 minutes in a brass cauldron and 41 minutes in a copper cauldron).

  7. Once brewing is complete, remove the potion from the heat.

  8. Optionally: thirty ml of Flobberworm mucus can be added to the potion and mixed with a non-magical utensil once it has cooled.

The final product will be canary yellow in color. It has a taste similar to earwax and a smell a bit like marshmallow. If the potion comes out pinkish at the end, then it has likely misbrewed and should be discarded. Consuming the potion when it has been improperly brewed can cause severe reactions, including feathers sprouting and worsened stomach problems.

To Store:

The Stomach Strengthening Solution should be stored in a hot environment. Light does not impact it, but it lasts much longer and proves more effective in a slightly warmer storage facility. It can be stored for up to eighteen months before it must be safely discarded and a new batch brewed.

To Use:

The Stomach Strengthening Solution aids the stomach in rebuilding the lining, particularly in the case of stress ulcers. When prescribed, 75 ml (about five tablespoons) of the potion should be taken at one time. The subject should then rest. The potion can be taken up to every six hours as necessary. It should not be taken for more than five days in a row, as it can become habit-forming.

Effects:

No effects will likely be noticed within the first six hours of taking the potion. However, after that time, the patient will likely experience a tingling sensation in the stomach that may even feel a bit like a non-painful burning. At this time, the pain should begin to diminish as well. After two or three days, it is recommended that the patient stop a regimen of the potion and see how they feel twelve hours after the last dosage. If they do not experience any pain, then they may stop taking the potion. The solution works to rebuild lost tissue in the stomach and small intestine as well as causing minor effects on the enzymes. It has occasionally been used to help those with Crohn’s Disease, a chronic disease that impacts the gastrointestinal track.

Allergic reactions to the serum may occur and be relatively severe. If a patient experiences regular bloody nose, swollen tongue, or numbness in the limbs, they should report to a healer directly, as they could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Caution:

The Stomach Strengthening Solution can be a habit-forming serum, so it should only be taken under the observation of a healer who can prescribe adequate doses and oversee the patient. It is not approved for children under twelve or those who are pregnant or may become pregnant soon. Those who are on a Stomach Strengthening regimen are advised not to go to work or engage in any vigorous activity; in fact, they are encouraged to stay home and in bed while their stomach lining is rebuilding.

Overdosing in the Stomach Strengthening Solution can be hazardous, and can lead to poisoning along with other effects such as blindness, uncontrollable hiccoughs, and hallucinations. If you or someone you know thinks that he or she has overdosed on the solution, please see a healer immediately.
