Flesh Rejuvenating Potion

Chapter 11

Flesh Rejuvenating Potion

Estimated Brewing Time:

Pewter cauldron: 180 minutes (3 hours)
Brass cauldron: 164 minutes (2 hours, 44 minutes)
Copper cauldron: 149 minutes (2 hours, 29 minutes

Ingredients:

Two (2) liters of water
Fifteen (15) ml salamander blood1
Thirty (30) ml essence of dittany2
Four (4) tb shredded boomslang skin1
One (1) whole ginger root2
Three (3) griffin claws1
Thirty (30) ml fresh lemon juice2
Fifteen (15) ml Flobberworm mucus3

Instructions:

Part One:

  1. Add one liter of water to your cauldron, and bring the heat to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  2. Add 15 ml salamander blood to the cauldron.

  3. Stir once counter-clockwise.

  4. Add 15 ml essence of dittany.

  5. Remove the cauldron from the heat entirely. Wait 30 seconds before continuing.

  6. Add four tb shredded boomslang skin while the cauldron is off the heat.

  7. Stir thrice counter-clockwise while the cauldron is removed from the heat.

  8. The cauldron will begin to hiss and spit during stirring. Please ensure that you do not get splashed during this process, or nasty, red lacerations will appear in the splashed areas.

  9. After the hissing and spitting subsides, after about two to three minutes, add the cauldron to the heat again, and maintain it at 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  10. Stir twice clockwise.

  11. Add 5 ml essence of dittany.

  12. Bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for 15 seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  13. Allow the potion to brew in your pewter cauldron for 93 minutes (this would be 84 minutes in a brass cauldron and 76 minutes in a copper cauldron).

  14. While your potion is brewing, cut your ginger root width-wise. The slices should be 0.5 cm (about 0.2 inches) in width. Put the root to the side for Part Two. During this time, you should also add three griffin claws to the mortar and crush to a fine, even consistency with the pestle. Leave these to the side for Part Two as well.

At this point in the brewing stage, the potion will be a bright red and will emit a light yellow smoke.

Part Two:

  1. Add one liter of water to the cauldron.

  2. Add one half of the sliced ginger root to the cauldron.

  3. Measure out 1.5 tablespoons of the crushed griffin claw and add this to the cauldron.

  4. If you have been brewing this correctly, at this point the potion will turn a vivid pink for about ten seconds, and will then transition to a pale green. If the potion instead turns blue or white/opaque, then stop brewing and safely discard the potion immediately.

  5. Bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for 8 seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  6. Add the rest of the sliced ginger root to the cauldron.

  7. Add 30 ml lemon juice to the cauldron.

  8. Stir twice clockwise with your wand.

  9. Add ten ml essence of dittany to the cauldron.

  10. Bring the heat up to 383 Kelvin (110°C/230°F) for 45 seconds, and then reduce heat again to 363 Kelvin (90°C/194°F).

  11. Stir four times clockwise with your wand.

  12. Allow the potion to brew in your pewter cauldron for 74 minutes (this would be 67 minutes in a brass cauldron and 61 minutes in a copper cauldron.)

  13. After brewing is completed, transfer the cauldron off of the heat entirely and let it cool for ten
    minutes
    .

  14. Add 15 ml of Flobberworm mucus to the mixture and stir it with your wooden spoon or non-magical stirring utensil until it is of an even consistency.

At the time you siphon the potion into your vial, it should be a light bluish-grey. Before it cools, it may emit pink sparks and an orange-tinted steam. The potion will smell a little like burned rubber and taste like spoiled milk and cabbage.

To Store:

The Flesh Rejuvenating Potion has a relatively short shelf life, lasting only two weeks at most before it must be discarded. The potion is not light sensitive must be stored in a very warm environment in order to keep. If it is stored at room temperature, it is typically only good for three to four days before it must be safely discarded.

To Use:

850 ml (about 8.5 oz) of the Flesh Rejuvenating Potion should be taken orally at one time. It cannot be combined with tea, juice, or other liquids, as it tends to react poorly. Food or drink should not be given 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after taking the potion. It must not be taken again for at least four days after an initial dosage. Although this potion should never be taken without supervision of a healer, possible overdoses should be reported immediately, as it can lead to tumorous growths, blood clots, and stroke.

Effects:

The Flesh Rejuvenating Potion can be used to regrow dead tissue that has been damaged as a result of infection or extreme burning. However, in extreme cases, this potion is ineffective and limbs may need to be amputated.

When consumed, the potion will cause a strong burning sensation in the patient’s throat and down to the stomach. This painful sensation should only last fifteen to twenty seconds before dissipating. After about three or four minutes, all living skin will begin to tingle and burn slightly and dead tissues will begin to flake. Dead and damaged skin will begin to peel off in giant chunks after about twenty minutes and last for about two hours. Following this, new skin will begin to grow in its place over the span of three to seven hours, depending on the size of the injured area. If the skin is too far gone, however, and the tissues are dead beyond repair, following the consumption of the potion, nothing will happen beyond the burning sensation.

In some cases, a patient’s hair and nails have fallen out. Side effects include nausea, stomach ulcers, dizziness, and trouble breathing. Allergic effects are rather drastic, and can include the patient’s teeth falling out as well as eruption of painful, purple growths on the skin. Some allergic reactions have led to stroke, cardiac arrest, and coma.

Caution:

The Flesh Rejuvenating Potion is a drastic potion that should only be taken with the prescription of an experienced and licensed healer excepting in extreme circumstances. It is not recommended for children or those who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Patients should be checked for allergies before consuming the potion, as side effects and allergic reactions can be severe.

As a note, while this potion tastes rather terrible, there are no known ingredients that can be added to improve the taste without compromising the integrity of the potion.
