Introduction

Chapter 2

When it comes to broomsticks, one need only look to the British Six for some of the most internationally acclaimed options. From the humble beginnings of the Cleansweep One from the Cleansweep Broom Company, all the way through to Ellerby and Spudmore’s blisteringly fast Firebolt Supreme, there can be no denying the critical role that Britain plays in the international broomstick manufacturing scene. This compendium aims to provide a runthrough of every major model from the British Six, as well as a handful of notable examples from other smaller companies and now-defunct businesses.

For the purposes of Owl Post ordering, several forms are included free of charge for each of the major manufacturers. At the back of this compendium, an index of artisan broommakers is included (new for 2019). Further information can be found in the relevant section.

Finally, this introduction would not be complete without a word of thanks to Broomstix in Diagon Alley, whose assistance enabled me to gain firsthand experience of some of the vintage brooms discussed within these pages. Their shop is open most days until 10pm, and their private flight range can be booked for special occasions or for test flights by Owl Post arrangement. For more details, contact Eustacia Whisp.

I hope that this compendium serves you well, dear Reader.
