Foreword by Lord Selwyn
Chapter 1
Reader,
Upon my youngest son’s ninth Yule, I endeavoured to follow up on the previous year’s gift. As is Selwyn family tradition, he had received a new broomstick that year. He was already unusually talented, and I privately wondered whether he would be following in the footsteps of Uncle Barnabas Selwyn, accomplished Chaser and, later in life, broomstick historian. It was with this resolve that I had this book located from the library.
Barnabas Selwyn wrote it in late 2020, not long before the accident that would ultimately claim his life. I wish him to be remembered as I remember him - fiercely filled with joie de vivre, happily talking to any who dared listen at balls and functions about the latest broom models. Although his compendium was published posthumously, many of his characteristic quirks and turns of phrase were edited out of the manuscript; it seemed somewhat as though his spirit no longer inhabited those soulless scripts for sale in Flourish and Blotts.
It is for that reason that I provide this copy of the book to Hogwarts, as it is found in the Selwyn Family Library. Unaltered, unedited, unchanged: these are the words of Barnabas Selwyn as he intended them read.
It is my wish that these pages ignite within you that same fire and excitement that Uncle Barnabas had. Though no magic can bring him back, his memory can live on.
