Journey to Mindful meditation - A Dark Arts Essay
Chapter 5
By practicing mindfulness meditation, we train ourselves to become more mindful throughout the day, particularly during difficult times.
Three key aspects of mindfulness are generally considered: Intention to cultivate awareness (and return to it repeatedly) Attention to what is occurring in the present moment (observing thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise) Attitude of non-judgment, curiosity, and kindness.
The purpose of mindfulness meditation is to focus on being aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the present moment, without interpreting or judging it. The practice of mindfulness consists of breathing methods, guided imagery, and other methods that help relax the body and mind.
I went through a period of my life where I struggled with anxiety and mind clutter a lot. I found mindfulness meditation helpful in centering myself and gaining a sense of groundedness. The first step is to find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. Try sitting cross-legged on a low cushion on the floor, or upright in a chair. As with any meditation, it's important to relax and concentrate on your breath. You can improve your breathing by doing several mindful exercises.
The key is to practice coming out of auto-pilot, become aware of your breathing, and expand your awareness outwards. Following those steps to mindfulness are:
- Five things you see around you.
- Four things you can touch around you.
- Three things you hear.
- Two things you can smell.
- One thing you can taste.
Being committed to this technique would allow the meditator to concentrate in ways where they would not only be aware of themselves but their surrounding.
