Hagalaz & Naudiz


The mundane meaning of Hagalaz is hail. The magical meanig is natural forces of either human, weather, or time itself. In merkstave, it depicts a natural disaster, chaos, & a confused mind. Use Hagalaz for weather magic. Hagalaz & Fehu is used together to preserve birth & illnesses. The mundane meaning of Naudiz is need. The magical meaning is physical needs, survival, & essential. In merkstave, it means death & hardship. Use Naudiz in sacrifice rituals for protection. The runes after Naudiz would portray the ritual outcome.


Isa & Jera


The mundane meaning of Isa is ice. The magical meaning is a delay, challenge, obstruction, & stagnation. It is common to write this rune in a negative setting & can be used to deliver a warning. Isa has no merkstave & instead is helpful to caution others while having a clear mind & is knowledgeable. The mundane meaning of Jera is harvest of seasons & of life & death cycles. The magical meaning is fertility, barrenness, growth, & decay. This rune is a double-edged sword, as it is both positive & negative. Thus, it has no merkstave. This rune can be used to note births, seasons, & full moons, as well as potions. In merkstave, it means dullness, unluckyness, shame, & ill-fortune. Use Perthro to strengthen moonlight magic & luck or happiness magic.


Algiz & Sowilo


The mundane meaning of Algiz is elk. The magical meaning is protection & guardianship. In merkstave, it means trouble & danger. Algiz is used to protect spell castors or property. Algiz & Sowilo is used together for protection & strengthen victory. The mundane meaning of Sowilo is sun. The magical meaning is power, good health, masculinity, & victory. In merkstave, it means darkness & defeat. Use Sowilo to strengthen spells & potions, as well as spells in Charms & Transfiguration.


Fun Facts
Eihwaz represents the more sacrifices you make, the stronger the protection will become.
The yew-tree is very poisonous, but it is flourishing & lives for two thousand years.
Sowilo was used to glorify deceased soldiers, to worship Thor, & in weapons.
Sowilo is theorized to be accountable for the Viking invasion of England.
