Lesson Nine: Big Names in Astronomy

Chapter 9

Aristarcus of Samos (310 - 230 BCE) - He invented a common sundial. He estimated the size of the sun and moon, but got the sizes wrong. He proposed that Earth rotates around the Sun.


Copernicus (1473 - 1543) - Supported Aristarcus' theory. Concluded that Earth's axis rotates.


Galileo (1564 - 1642) - The father of modern science. Concluded that objects fall at the same rate. He made his own telescope and observed Venus' phases.


Newton (1643 - 1727) - Seperated light using a prism. He invented calculus.


Von Rheticus (1514 - 1576)  - He was a wizard. He convinced Copernicus to publish his work by showing Mars looked brighter when further from the sun.


Dr. Ayesha Mansour - Discovered the A.M.E.. Discovered that Heavy Water tames the Sun's magic.
