Lesson Three: Tools for Wizards and Viewing Tips

Chapter 3

The von Rheticus model telescope is a terrestrial telescope. It has two buttons - a large one and a small one. If you press one a red number appears as a display that shows current magnification. The large one increases it, and the small one decreases it. A knob on the left side changes the focus. There are two additional buttons, but they will be discussed later. It can achieve a 1 arcsecond resolution. Its greatest useful magnification is 250.

There are a few charms on it to help keep it protected. Never look at the sun or full moon through the telescope. The sun would blind you, and both would destroy the charms.

A lunascope looks like a telescope, but will show you the phase of the moon on any given date.

A moon chart shows ten consecutive dates and moon phases. Tap the right side of the paper to show the next ten, the left side for the previous ten.

A celestial globe shows the constellations. The magical version also shows the sun and planets.

An orrery is a not to scale model of the solar system. The magical version moves without wires or motors.

A star chart is a map of the sky to locate stars and constellations.

An astronomer's lamp emits pure red light to help with dark adaptation.
