The Squib: Bethany
Chapter 9
I woke up in the infirmary.
Not my cozy bed in the common room.
I lay in a cot for a bed with thin sheets. White curtains hung around my bedside. After glancing at the clock I realized it was 1:45.
I was a bit confused so I just stayed in my bed until morning came.
~
It had been a week since I first woke up in the infirmary. I was informed I must stay for 5 weeks, they didn't explain why.
Every night I lay awake, and every morning I was bored to death. Madame Promfrey wouldn't allow me to do my homework, and asked the professors to excuse all work. I on the other hand wanted to do my homework. But no, I'm "sick". According to Madame Promfrey I have a poisonous virus, that needs caring for. But I don't have a concussion! I mean even if I do have a virus that doesn't mean I can't do my homework. Besides what's the worst that could happen, the homework getting sick? If that's her reasoning then I probably am in the infirmary because of a cold, or she just wanted to treat a patient.
~
It was 11:00 and I couldn't fall asleep. I had slept all day due to Madame Promfrey giving me sleep pills. She said "You need to get your rest in if you want that virus gone", so now I am stuck being awake ALL night long.
I didn't just want to lie here awake so I decided I would leave the infirmary and go somewhere. Perhaps the library. As I got out of bed I slipped on a robe, thinking no one was going to be at the library at this time.
I got to the library as quiet as I could and began to look around. I then heard footsteps coming. I quickly hide behind a book shelf and peeked out. I was shocked to see a student with what looked like A LOT of books. I cam out of hiding and walked over. I had expected it to be a teacher, but I guess not. She looked over, saw me, and was going to make a run for it when I stopped her. "I'm not supposed to be here either" I told her. The girl looked as if she was going to cry. "You don't understand" she said. "Understand what?" I asked. "I can't tell you" she replied. "Hey, you don't have to tell me but if you want to I will listen" I offered. "Ok," she said agreeing "I have to tell someone after all this time" And so she began.
"All my life, I have wanted to go to Hogwarts. I dreamed about it day and night, and when I turned 11, and no letter came I was so sad. You see, I come from an all magic family, so I am a squib. My mother and father were so embarrassed as to having a squib that the hide me, they made me stay in my bedroom all day and all night. I was only allowed out twice a day to use the bathroom. Otherwise I was locked up. They gave me food, and plenty of water, but they restricted my freedom. I was like an animal locked up in its cage. It was horrible, so when I found a secret passage in our cellar straight here to Hogwarts, I took the chance, and every night I come here to read the books in this library and see if maybe even a little magic comes out of me." She explained.
"Wait, whats you name? Mines Bethany."
"Dawn" she answered.
"Where do you live?" I asked.
"My parents own Honeydukes in Hogsmeade" she said miserably.
"Oh" I answered.
Truth to be told I had no idea where Hogsmeade was or what Honeydukes was. I figured it was a shop but I couldn't be sure.
After promising to meet her again tomorrow night, I left.
I felt as if my days in the infirmary wouldn't be as bad anymore if I met Dawn every night.
And I think that thought is what allowed me to fall asleep.
