Sorting & Midnight At The Common Room: Zia

Chapter 3

Sorting. This was what I was really looking forward to. West said that we had to battle a dragon to figure out what house we were to be sorted in, but my older sister Mia (I was named after her) told me we just had to try on a hat. Mia works at the Ministry of Magic right now, because she graduated from Hogwarts 2 years ago. I don't remember what department she works in but I think it is the office of House-elf relocation. I love Mia and want to be just like her but I have so many siblings that if I were to say that all of them would get deeply offended. Mia was sorted into Gryffindor just like everyone else in my family besides Godric (who my mom named after the founder of Gryffindor). Ironically Godric got sorted into Ravenclaw, but I still think he holds his name proudly.

Professor McGonagall came in the small room we were led into after we got out of the boats. She then said "Okay, you may come" then opened the door which then took us through the tables of all the other houses and to the table of the Professors.  It was hard to explain especially since everything looked just simply wonderful!

There upon a stool sat the sorting hat. It was wrinkled and tore in spots but never the less opened up it's wide brimmed mouth and began to sing:

Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

At the end of it's song everyone began to clap. I clapped along with everyone else but was starting to feel a bit nervous. What if I wasn't in Gryffindor? Even though Mia told me all the houses were good, I still would rather be in Gryffindor, like the rest of my family.

Professor McGonagall began to call names.

"Der, Gorgal" she called out. The boy came up looking like a nervous wreck. He was shaking all over and when he put the hat on you could see the hat quivering back and forth.

"Syltherin!" It called out after a moments hesitation.

"Earheit, Lola"

"HufflePuff!"

"Grea, Vera"

"Ravenclaw!"

The sorting went on and on until Professor McGonagall reached the Rs. Then I listened.

"Reed, Kiara"

"Gryffindor!"

"Rik, George"

"Slytherin!"

Then finally,

"Rye, Zia"

I shook as I walked up. I then sat on the stool and the last I saw was people staring at me, before the hat slipped down on my head obscuring my vision.

Please, Gryffindor I thought. "So, you want to be Gryffindor?" a voice in my head said. "So smart, so loyal, so brave, so cunning. Just too hard to choose." The voice said. I felt as if this hat was reading my thoughts, now that I think about it, it probably was. "You could be so great, so powerful, so intelligent" it paused, "but if not it must be..."

"Gryffindor!"

I joined the cheering Gryffindor's not bothering to watch the sorting anymore. I was too tired and hungry. But I was able to see that the girl on the train with me was sorted into Ravenclaw. Good, I thought relived.

The sorting finished and Professor McGonagall took the hat away. Then the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore, said a few word that I was too tired to hear, and after I blinked the gold plates were full of food. Grabbing a bit of everything, I sat and ate in silence. The other first years were talking about how they figured out they were magic, while the older kids were talking to there friends, and some prefects were talking about classes. I just ate until me hunger was no more.

It was late. Probably 10:30 or something. I just couldn't fall asleep though, I tossed and turned but I lay wide awake. What happened to my drowsiness? I thought. I was so tired when I wanted to be awake, and now I can't fall asleep when I want to be asleep!

I decided to just sit by the fire for awhile, when I got tired I would come up to my dorm. I walked down the padded stairs in my slippers. My pajamas were thin, so I began to get cold. Once I reached the fire though I felt MUCH better. I sat in an armchair laying back and I was just about to close my eyes when I saw somebody.

I sat straight up and looked them in the face. Then, I gasped. "What, but...but, your in Ravenclaw" was all I managed. It was the girl from the train! She looked at me confused. Then something dawned on her. "Oh! You've met my twin!" She said looking like she was going to laugh. "Twin?" I said confused. "Yeah, my sister and I are twins from a muggle family. She was sorted in Ravenclaw while I was sorted into Gryffindor." She explained.

Oh I thought, and I was pretty sure it was her sister that was on the train with me. But anyway you could never know. So causally I ask "So were you on the train?" Her face darkened. "I was sick" she said quickly. I doubted that, but I didn't pursue any further.

I looked at the clock. 12:00! "We better get to bed" I said indicating to the clock.

She jumped up. "Right, we have a big day tomorrow." "Yep, see you in class" I said. "If we can find the classes!" she said laughing. I grinned, "If only we had a map, but the stupid staircases keep moving and it's so confusing!"

"Well, see you tomorrow!" She said.

We walked up to the dorm together then after bidding each other good night went to bed. But I couldn't top smiling because I knew that we were going to be friends, and I think she knew that too.
