Chapter 16

(Y/n’s pov)

While everyone was talking about the winter dance, I was studying and keeping up with my classes. I wasn’t too excited about the dance.

It was a Tuesday morning, the sun was out and all but I still didn’t want to get up. I didn’t even get up to go to breakfast. I got out of bed and got ready for the day. Thomas appeared in my room and asked me why I wasn’t at breakfast.

“Too tired” I replied

“What time did you stay up till last night?”

“Umm, probably about 3, this morning”

“Couldn't sleep?”

“Nope, reading”

“You stayed up till 3 reading?” He asked, looking concerned

“Yeah… don’t you ever do that?” I asked slowly

“No”

I rolled my eyes “Of course not”

I gathered all my books and headed off to class. The lesson was short but the professor gave us a lot of homework. He let us use the second half of class to start working on it. When the period ended I left to go to my next class and glared at Cora as I passed her in the hall. She hadn’t been bothering me since the last time I talked to her. I entered my next class just as the period started and found my seat in the back row. The teacher talked for the whole class then assigned us some reading at the end of class.

I left for lunch and ate quickly before heading to the library to work on my homework. I finished my work and readings just as lunch ended. I headed off to DADA. That class was boring no matter what because I already knew everything. The professor asked a simple question but no one answered. I figured they didn’t know the answer even though it was an easy question, for me at least. It had been in the reading he assigned and I had known it since I was seven.

“What about you Miss Riddle, do you know the answer?” He called on me and I answered it. “Correct Miss Riddle, now can you tell me how you know that?”

“It was in the reading you assigned at the beginning of the month” I answered

“Yes, yes it was, you guys need to remember this stuff, and pay more attention in class” He raised his voice and looked at a boy who looked like they had just been sleeping. A couple people laughed at the boy but stopped when the professor looked at them. The rest of class went by and he told everyone to reread the chapters that the question I answered was in. Everyone had to read it again, except for me.

Next I headed off to potions. Last class we brewed amortentia because the professor wanted to give us a challenge to see if we could do it. We were in groups so there was less of a chance to fail. I was chosen as the leader for some reason, I don’t know why. I read out the instructions and we got all the ingredients then started making the potion. It was harder than I thought it would be but it was still kinda easy. Today we were going to find out if any of us were successful in making it. I sat down and class started.

“I have looked at your potions and only one group was successful” He turned to me “Riddle’s group was the only successful group” I looked at the other people who had helped make it and they were smiling. “Now does anyone know what amortentia smells like?”

A girl raised her hand and he called on her “It’s different for everyone depending on the person the person smelling it found most attractive or someone the person liked or it could just smell like an object you hold close”

“Yes, and today I would like everyone to smell it and tell me and the class what you smell”

Oh great, I mean I always could make it up if what I smelled was too obvious. I was intrigued though, I wasn’t really into romance and what not so I wondered what or who I would smell. One by one everyone went up and said what they smelled. Then it was my turn, I walked up and smelled it. It smelled sorta weird “I smell flowers, books, and… smoke” blood, I finished in my head I walked back to my chair. Who was that supposed to be? I could understand books and smoke, maybe blood for Theo but he didn’t smell like flowers and I didn’t associate him with flowers. Indu I could see flowers and books but not smoke or blood. The only other person I knew who smoked was Mattheo but he was my brother and he didn’t really like books so… Was it two different people or something?

I left confused and headed off to dinner. I was quiet until Thomas waved his hand in front of my face “Y/n? Are you ok?”

I shook my head and focused in him “What, oh, yeah I’m fine, just thinking”

“I heard that you successfully made amortentia in potions class” Mattheo congratulated

“Yeah, I was the only group that did it correctly”

“What did you smell? You don’t have to share if you don’t want to”

“I don’t exactly know, I feel like I smelled two different people or possibly three, no one fit all four things I smelled”

“Odd, what did you smell?”

“Flowers, books, smoke, and blood” I recalled, whispering the last one

“Yeah, that is odd” Thomas joined the conversation

“Unless you smelled yourself” Mattheo commented

“I don’t smoke though or smell like smoke and I don’t smell like flowers”

“True, but you have smoked before”

“Please don’t bring that up again”

“Sorry, just saying” He leaned back a little

“I mean it could be two people, it’s possible” Thomas claimed

“Then who do you think it would be?”

“I have my guesses” He smiled and in his mind he said Indu and Theo

“Seriously” I shoved him a little bit and rolled my eyes “First one probably, second one absolutely not”

“Ehh, I mean…” Mattheo had been listening and he shrugged

“I’m done with you guys” I looked away and shook my head to myself. My brothers, they were not going to stop pushing me about boys, especially about Theo.
