Cell Structures
We have been studying cell structures in class. At the beginning of the investigation, we knew that cells are the basic unit of life. Plants and animals have some of the same organelles. Plant and animal cells also have organelles in one but not the other; vice versa. My goal for this investigation was to find the type of cells on the unknown slides. The guiding question was, “What are the types of cells on the unknown slides?”

To gather the data I needed to answer the guiding question I used a microscope to look at the slides. We looked at eight slides, knowing what the first four slides, A, B, C, and D were. We were looking for cell walls, vacuole sizes, and the shape of the cell (rigid or smooth), trying to identify the last four slides, E, F, G, and H. We also knew that plant cells have cell walls, large vacuoles, and rigid shapes and that animal cells have multiple small vacuoles, smooth shapes, and no cell wall. I then analyzed the data I collected by looking to see if the cells had plant or animal characteristics.
