Superstition and Religion
Chapter 4
Sailors also had to worry about superstitions, sailors had many of them. They believed that if a sailor was misbehaving, he was thought to be the cause of all of the unfortunate events that occurred. They practiced the religion Christianity, for protection. To stop the risk of offending God many ships forbid cursing, inappropriate stories, any kind of ungodly talk, and gambling. Most of the time the sailors mixed superstition and religion. They weren’t allowed to burn any printed pages for the chance of it being a page of the Bible, many couldn’t read or write so they didn’t know if it was a part of the Bible or not. They also couldn’t start a voyage o a Friday because that was the day Jesus died on the cross. They even carried a burning firebrand to drive out evil spirits. The sailors were very superstitious, but they trusted God and honored him.
