The movie of Beetlejuice is set in Vermont, roughly in the time of 1988. It first takes place with a lovely married couple, Adam, and Barbara Maitland. They die, but they become ghosts who are haunting their own home. A lot of time goes by, as they realize that they have died, and a new family buys the house. No one can see the Maitlands at first, but Lydia Deetz eventually sees them, because she is into the supernatural world, and therefore does not ignore the ghosts as the rest of the family does. Barbara and Adam do not like the family that bought the house, and they try to summon Beetlejuice who is another ghost, claiming to be a "bio-excorsist". They eventually summon him, but he turns out to be a very creepy fellow, so they leave him behind. Eventually the Maitlands need help, so Lydia summons Beetlejuice, and ends up saving Adam and Barbara. Beetlejuice had his own ideals in mind, but quickly enough, the Maitlands and Lydia were able to defeat them.
