Chapter 9
It was a cold winter Saturday and Cat was taking an afternoon walk by the lake. She told me she’d be here by now. Cat thought to herself as she sat down next to the frozen lake. She had gotten a letter from Fern saying to meet by the lake to chat. “Hey Cat!” Fern said as she got out from behind a bush.
The girls hair was white and her tan skin was now pale. “Hey Fern. Did you need to talk to me about something?” Cat said when Fern found a comfortable spot on the frozen grass. “Nah, I just wanted to talk to you about whatever friends normally talk about, possibly help you with any problems you might have,” Fern said smiling at Cat. “Well I have been thinking about something that’s sort of been bothering me for a while…” Cat said remembering when she yelled at Malfoy in the hall.
She then turned a deep shade of scarlet as she remembered that he had hugged her. “Why’re you blushing so much? Did something good happen since we last talked?” Fern teased. “M—Maybe…” Cat didn’t know it was possible, but she seemed to have turned an even deeper shade of scarlet. “Um… so there’s this boy in the same house as me and… o—one day I yelled at him because I thought he was going to kiss a girl in our house and uhm… after we talked about why I did that he uh, he… hugged me which made me turn into a fluffy white house-cat.”
She hugged her knees, trying to hide her face from Fern. “So what’s your problem then? I don’t see anything except a boy that doesn’t know how to show a girl he likes how he feels.” Fern said, trying hard not to tease her. “W—What? I—I—I don’t think that’s how he feels about me, we—we’re just friends!
“R—Right?” Cat said staring into Fern's brown eyes. “You shouldn’t lie to yourself, Cat, otherwise you’ll start to believe that every boy that shows you affection is “just a friend”.” Fern said. After Cat cooled down she decided to ask Fern if she knew what quidditch was trying to change the subject. After Fern asked what quidditch was, went into full detail on the sport.
Fern seemed more excited that she was learning something new more than feeling excited that quidditch was something Cat thought would be fun to do. As the sun started to go down, the friends said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.
During dinner she pretended that she didn’t know anything about what Fern had told her and ignored her brother when he kept asking what she did all day. After dinner, she decided to ask Draco again why he hugged her, and since Kade had gone to bed early, she decided now would be the perfect time. So with as much courage as she could gather, she sat down on the common room sofa and asked him, stuttering every now and then.
“Why are you suddenly asking about that?” Malfoy asked, his cheeks slightly pink.
“Well I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it, and I was only wondering if you did it because you liked me or something,” she said in a near whisper, feeling her ears and tail trying to pop out.
“Cat, you’ve got this whole thing wrong. I only hugged you because you’re my friend and it’s fun to tease you. Though it’s not as fun as comforting you,” Malfoy said getting up from the chair he was sitting in, getting closer to Cat. She stared at him before realizing he was still getting closer and hid her face in her hands. He sat next to her and moved her hands from her face. “There’s no need to hide,” Malfoy said as he pulled her head onto his shoulder.
“D—Does this mean you don’t like me as anything more than a friend?” Cat said in barely a whisper. He, after a bit of thinking, said, “If that’s how you see everything, then yes, I do think of you as a friend.” Cat lifted her head and gently kissed his cheek, making him jump. He looked away from her as she put her head back onto his shoulder and started purring, which sounded strange since she didn’t purr often. “Now we’re even,” Cat said, smiling at his reaction.
When she finally woke up and got ready for breakfast, she had left with Kade but without Malfoy and ignored him when he tried to talk to her. Something inside her told her that she didn’t feel like talking to him today, and when she tried to, the thing made her walk away. She wasn’t even able to sit next to him anytime they were in the Great Hall so Kade ended up sitting between them most of the day. Doing that made her twin very uncomfortable and annoyed but he didn’t argue with her since he’d apparently made a promise with her when they were younger, though she could barely remember growing up. After classes were over, instead of going straight to dinner, she and Kade walked around in the castle until she spotted something in one of the unused classrooms. They went inside the room and over to the tall covered thing, her curiosity getting the best of her as she gently pulled the cover off, revealing a mirror lined with gold with the word Erised carved into it.
When they looked in the mirror, what the twins saw made them both look behind them. In the mirror, there were three people, a man and two women. The man had a hood on, one of the women had long dark brown hair and yellow eyes like Kade’s but a bit darker, the other had long faded red hair and blue eyes. “W—Who are you?” she asked the people in the mirror in a low voice. Suddenly, the twins had a vision, but this one was more of a memory.
In their memory, the woman with yellow eyes was holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket with a black hat that had cat ears on it, the man was holding another baby that was wrapped in a blue blanket and was wearing an orange tiger hat. The other woman from the mirror was nowhere in sight. Then the woman spoke in a strained voice saying, “Cat, Kade, we need you both to be quiet for a bit, can you do that for us? Just until the dangers passed?” The vision ended, tears filling her eyes as she and Kade now recognized the people in the mirror.
