Chapter 7, Befriending the Trio.
Chapter 7
A few weeks passed since Cat told Malfoy about her and Kade’s weird dreams and what she’d been meaning to tell him since after her encounter with Fern. All she could think about since then was the vision she and her twin had been having for months. How do we warn Harry about what’s going to happen to him? He probably hates us since we’re in Slytherin and I’ve been hanging out with Malfoy a lot, Kade has only been tagging along with me. Which reminds me, don’t we have to go to flying lessons with the Gryffindor’s sometime today? That’s when Cat realized someone was shaking her.
“Cat! Cat, snap out of it!” she heard Malfoy say as he continued to shake her. “Stop shaking her, she might get sick!” Kade said trying to stop Malfoy. She looked up and said, “Sorry I spaced out for a bit.”
Malfoy stopped shaking her, suddenly very concerned as he said, “Has something been bothering you again? Is it, you know, what you two told me by the greenhouse?”
“No it’s not that, I just remembered we have our first flying lesson with the second-year Gryffindor’s today and I’ve never been very good at flying so… I started to panic a bit.” Cat said, hoping that he couldn’t tell that she was lying, she’s actually very good at flying. Malfoy just stared blankly at her as if trying to find the right words to help her, Kade looked concerned and opened his mouth to ask her something but then shut it when he realized she was partly lying. “It’s not a big deal, I’ll stop panicking once I mount a broom.” Cat ended their conversation. Draco then got up and once she realized he was heading towards the Gryffindor table, ran over to him, Kade following her like a lost kitten with Crabbe and Goyle close behind.
He snatched a weird ball out of a boy's hand and Cat recognized it as something called a Remembrall; she'd read about it somewhere last year. Harry and Ron jumped to their feet when he did that. “Malfoy, give it back to him before you get in trouble.” Cat said with a slightly commanding tone. “Why should I?” Draco said as he put the weird ball under his arm.
“Because, McGonagall’s coming over here as we speak.” And just as she said, McGonagall came over and asked them what was going on. “Malfoy’s got my Remembrall, Professor,” said the Gryffindor boy. Malfoy scowled as he quickly dropped the weird ball called a Rememberall back on the table, Kade accidentally sniggered when Malfoy got in trouble.
“Just looking,” he said as he sloped away with Crabbe and Goyle behind him.
“Sorry about him, he thinks he can just take things without asking just because his dad is really important.” Cat said to Harry and Ron as they sat back down. “Why do you stick around with him if he’s always acting like that then?” Harry said with no real hints of curiosity. “I have a feeling that he’s not really that bad deep down.” Cat said as she heard Malfoy calling to her from the Slytherin table.
“Is that why you’re always making me hang around with the two of you?” Kade asked his sister, sounding a bit offended. “We gotta go now. And I’ve told you multiple times that you don’t need to follow me around everywhere anymore,” she turned and walked away, Kade followed her back to the table. When she sat back down at the table, her heart got loud and she took a thin blindfold out of her pocket. “Sis, can you please hand me my blindfold.
“It’s happening again.” Kade asked her quietly with his eyes closed. Putting the thin blindfold on, she gave him his blindfold before continuing to eat her porridge. At exactly five-thirty that same afternoon, she, Kade, and the other second-year Slytherins hurried down to the grounds for their first flying lesson of the year. It was a clear and breezy day but that didn’t help Cat from feeling scared and anxious as she fiddled with the blindfold in her pocket to help calm her nerves. Kade put his hand on her shoulder to attempt to help her relax.
It took a while for the Gryffindor’s to arrive to start the lesson and when they finally arrived, their teacher, Madam Hooch, who had short gray hair and eyes like a hawk, started the lesson. “Well, what are you all waiting for? None of you is actually new to this. Everyone stand on the left side of a broomstick.” she barked. “Come on, hurry up.
“We did this last year.” Cat nervously stood next to one of the broomsticks at the end of their line, Kade was standing next to his broom on her left. Her broom looked old and had little twigs sticking out making her even more nervous as she put her thin blindfold on in case her heart started beating loudly again.
“We’ll be going over what you learned last year for the next few classes. To start, stick your right hand over your broom,” Madam Hooch called form the front of the class once everyone was standing next to a broom, “and say ‘Up!’” Everyone shouted “UP!” Cat’s broom flew into her hand and she saw that at least two others had flown up as well.
Kade’s broom had gone up a little but kept floating away from him. After everyone’s brooms had finally gone up and into their waiting hands, Kade had to get a new one, Madam Hooch had re-shown them how to mount their brooms. Cat followed their teachers every move until it was time to start hovering in place. She was so nervous that her broom had flown a little too high, causing Allison to laugh. This started a bunch of pointing and jeering as she lowered her broom to the correct height, glaring at Allison as she did so.
She may have been angry but she was scared of confrontation so she stayed quietly hovering. She was still upset later that night and didn’t even chase after Draco when he went to antagonize Harry and Ron in the Great Hall.
It’s been a while since I last spoke to Draco. Maybe I should stop ignoring him. Speaking of Malfoy, what is he doing over there? Down the hallway Cat saw Malfoy speaking with a first-year named Pansy. Out of curiosity she yelled, “Hey Malfoy, what are you doing over there?” which made both the first-years jump.
Whatever he was talking about didn’t seem important anymore because he ended his conversation and started walking towards Cat. “What were you talking about over there?” Cat said to him, trying to hide the fear in her voice as he continued to get closer to her. “I was asking her a question. Did you think I was going to tell her your secret or something?” Malfoy said, his nose would be touching hers if he’d taken another step.
“No, I just wanted to know what you were doing, that’s all.” Cat said, not really sure why she shouted. “I know that’s not the only reason why you yelled at me.” Malfoy said, starting to get closer to Cat, staring into her eyes. “It’s not that important of reason, but if you really want to know, it looked like she was about to kiss you. Which would be a really weird thing to do in a hallway filled with other students.”
An awkward silence filled the air around them for what felt like ages before Malfoy said, “Did you get jealous so you yelled to stop her before she could do anything?” Cat looked up at Malfoy, seeing him looking at the wall, his cheek a light pink color. “What if I said that I was just a teensy bit jealous?” Cat said quietly, though she wasn’t telling the truth. He turned his head to look at her, a small smile forming. Before Cat could say anything else, he had wrapped his arms around her and gave her a gentle squeeze.
When Malfoy backed away a bit to give her some space, she was blushing so much, she thought her head might explode. She then heard a small pop, and was soon on four legs. These legs were different from her lion ones though. They were white and fluffy, rather than gold and furry. She’d turned into a different cat. “I didn’t think that would happen,” Malfoy said as he gently picked her up.
“W—Why’d you do that?!” Cat stuttered when she had regained the ability to speak. Malfoy laughed and walked back to the common room holding the now white and fluffy four-legged Cat. Kade looked at them curiously before he too turned into a white fluffy cat.
The next day, Cat decided that if she and Kade were ever going to warn Harry of the dangers to come, they needed to befriend him and his two friends. The twins had no classes with him so they thought it'd be best to talk to him during lunch to try and become at least closer with him than they were now.
“Hello Harry.” Cat said at lunch that afternoon, Kade standing next to her.
Harry looked at them and said, “What’re you two planning to do that involves me getting hurt?”
“What? We would never hurt anyone unless we really needed to! We just wanted to chat with you before your next class,” Cat said, her brother nodding behind her. She was a little offended that he thought they would do something like that. Then she saw Fred and George trying not to laugh a short distance away. Sighing, Kade said, “Did Fred and George tell you that we’d be doing something so terrible to you?”
Harry looked at her twin and said, “They were tricking me, weren’t they?” The twins nodded and Harry looked like he’d just shouted something stupid at his best friend. “Anyway, why do you two want to talk with me?” he asked, looking between the twins. “Because Harry, we want to be friends with you. And the only way to do that is talk with the person you want to befriend,” Cat said, Kade nodding before saying, “We also have something important to tell you.”
“So will you consider being our friend? We understand if you don’t want to, after all our houses hate each other.” Cat said looking at her feet, Kade also looked down at his feet. “We can try.” Harry said after a moment of silence. After they all agreed to at least try to be friends, Cat and Harry departed so they could get to their next class, Kade followed her telling her about how cool it would be if they did become friends.
During their break Harry had introduced Cat and Kade to Hermione, the bushy-haired girl from their visions, and properly introduced them to Ron. “I never would have thought that some people liked naming their children after animals.” Hermione said after they were fully introduced to everyone. “It is a bit strange, isn’t it?” Cat said.
“Kade and I were adopted by muggles as babies because no one ever found our real parents.” Cat said, staring at a bird perched above them. “That’s so sad.” Hermione said in a choked voice, her eyes swimming with tears. “You get used to it after a while. If anything, our real parents probably weren’t very good people anyway.
“And we love our adopted ones like any other child loves their real parents, so it’s not really that bad.” Kade said as he stared at a squirrel running in the grass. Harry seemed to be lost in thought before they all started talking about Quidditch. Weeks passed since then and Cat and Kade were now being invited to talk with the trio about how to get to the thing — that they now knew was called the philosopher’s stone — before “Snape” could.
“What if it’s not Snape when we get down there? What if it’s someone else that’s trying to get it?” Cat asked them as they headed down to the great hall for lunch, Kade nodded his head in agreement.
The twins already knew it wasn’t Snape trying to get the stone, but didn’t know if they could trust the other three with the information that Kade and Cat had visions just yet. “Who else could possibly want to get their hands on the stone for you-know-who?” Harry asked. Cat then said, “Anyone could want that stone for you-know-who, just think about it. And we don’t actually know if Snape’s after it. He’s never said that he was after anything.”
The trio thought for a moment before Hermione said, “You know Harry, she could be right. You never told us Snape said anything about trying to get something.” They split up when they reached the great hall, and when Cat and Kade sat down, she felt someone sit next to her.
“Where’ve you two been that’s more important than chatting with me?”
She jumped when she heard Malfoy’s voice. “We've made some new friends, and they wanted us to join them during almost every break.” Cat said looking into Malfoy’s eyes, she could almost see the jealousy rising inside of him. “You guys never told me you made new friends. When can I meet them?” Malfoy said, sounding the smallest bit hurt that they didn’t say anything about their friends.
“Actually, you’ve already met them.” Cat said, knowing that Malfoy didn’t like the trio at all. They continued to chat while they ate their lunch and the twins made sure that they didn’t tell him about Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s plans to go where the philosopher’s stone was, or who their new friends actually were.
