Chapter 13, A Plan in Motion.
Chapter 13
It was now May and the plan was to begin any day now. Cat was in a bed at the hospital wing, not feeling too well. Her throat was sore and she had a high temperature. Madam Pomfrey had already given her medicine so her fever didn’t get worse. So bored… wish I could go outside, or at least do something that isn’t sitting in bed while everyone else gets to do whatever they want to, she thought before remembering that she had brought her diary. Lifting up the pillow under her head, she grabbed her diary, some ink, and a quill before laying back down in the bed and writing everything she was thinking and what had been going on since school first started.
By the time she was done, Madam Pomfrey had walked in with a bowl of soup and some more medicine for her. After Cat had eaten and taken the medication, she slowly drifted off into a deep sleep. When she woke up the next day, she felt a lot better. Her throat wasn’t sore and her temperature was back to normal. After Madam Pomfrey checked her to make sure she wasn’t sick anymore, Cat got out of bed and went to go get ready to go eat breakfast, Kade seemed to have known she was better because he waited until she was ready to leave with her. When she wasn’t even an inch inside the great hall, Malfoy called to her, “Cat!
“Over here!” Cat and Kade walked over to him. “Where were you yesterday?” Draco said as she sat down next to him, Kade sitting on the other side of her. “I was sick yesterday,” Cat said as she was putting sausage on her plate.
“That explains why I saw Madam Pomfrey grab a bowl of soup yesterday during dinner.”
The two continued their chat until it was time to get to class.
A few weeks later Harry came up to Cat and Kade saying, “Tonight.” Knowing what he meant by that she nodded and said, “I’ll be there,” Kade said the same. Later that night, Cat woke Kade and together they snuck out of the common room and waited inside the room Harry told them to hide in until he, Ron, and Hermione got there. Clutching the potion’s she knew would help Kade and her get through the fire wall, she waited patiently staying as silent as a mouse. That’s when the twins saw them, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all hiding underneath Harry’s invisibility cloak. She still didn’t know why she could see them through the cloak but thought it must have something to do with the mark on her right collarbone.
The twins waited until Mr. Filch had passed and was far enough not to see them before quietly heading towards the others. Once they were underneath the invisibility cloak, they all started walking towards the door with the three-headed dog inside it. Once they were inside the door, they found that their enemy had already found a way to soothe the dog to sleep. There was a harp playing a calm tune right next to the trapdoor that led into the devil's snare. As Cat had expected, the calm tune that was playing stopped, and the dog woke up, growling at the four of them.
Without needing to be told to, Cat ran past the dog, making sure to dodge it as one head tried to bite her, and up to the harp. She turned the harp into a grand piano with a transfiguration spell she’d read about in the library. Sitting down on the stool, she began to play the only thing she could on the piano.
Her song soothed the dog back into a deep sleep as Harry said, “I’ll go first.” Hermione, Ron, Cat, and Kade nodded before they all opened the trapdoor. Harry jumped in first, then Ron, next Hermione, then Kade, and lastly Cat.
After Hermione told them to calm down in the devil's snare, they all fell through it, except for Ron, Hermione had to save him, and back onto hard ground. They walked through the next door and it was, just as Cat and Kade suspected, full of flying keys. “Harry, look for a key that is weaker than the others.” Kade started and Cat finished for him, “If it looks like it’s flying slower than the others then it’s probably been used recently.”
“How do we get it?” Hermione asked.
“Harry needs to get on that broom and catch it like he does with the snitch during quidditch.” Kade said, pointing at the only broom. Harry did as he said and, after a bit of circling and chasing, along with being chased, caught the key, walking in when he opened the door. Inside there was a giant wizard chess board. “We’re not helping with this one since we know Ron knows exactly what we have to do since he’s practically the king of wizard chess.” Cat said, looking at Ron.
They played the game and just like in Kade and Cat’s vision, Ron had sacrificed himself for the others to go to the next room. In the next room, there was a table with a selection of potions and a note with a riddle on it. Neither of the twins helped with this room either since they didn’t know what potion Hermione had grabbed in their visions. Instead Cat handed her brother one of the two potions she had and took the cork out of her own potion to wait for Harry to drink the one Hermione gave him. “Ready Cat and Kade?” Harry said when she and Kade, after drinking their potions, transformed into their lion forms.
“Ready,” they growled in unison. “Be careful! Don’t let him hurt you!” Hermione called after them as they walked through the black fire and into the last door. When they walked into the room, it was just how Cat and Kade had seen in their visions. There was the mirror of Erised in the middle of the room.
Unlike their visions, they could actually hear someone speaking. “He’s here. Behind the mirror,” she growled quietly to Harry. Then she saw Quirrell walk out from behind the mirror. She growled, which seemed to have scared the professor for a few seconds before he locked his gaze to Harry. She nudged Harry’s leg meaning to say, told you.
Harry ignored her and said, “You!” Quirrell smiled, he didn’t even twitch when she and her brother started to stalk towards him. “Me,” he said calmly. The twins continued to watch him as they got closer while he said, “I wondered whether I’d be meeting you here, Potter. And I see you’ve brought a few friends.” They both growled at him, she was holding back the urge to bite that smile off his face.
Her and Kade’s hearts were pounding so hard that they couldn’t hear what anyone was saying. Quirrell snapped his fingers and ropes sprang out of thin air at them, she and Kade dodged the ropes while Cat watched as the ropes wrapped themselves tightly around Harry. I still can’t hear them, she thought as she dodged more rope, Kade doing the same, before Quirrell seemed to have given up, the scent of his fear drowning in hope. She knew he was hoping that neither she nor her brother would attack him while their friend was tied up and she watched as Harry fell on the floor. I know what to do now, Cat thought as she bolted towards her friend, grabbing the ropes wrapped around him in her mouth. Her heart stopped pounding loudly but she wished it didn’t right then.
“Use the boy… Use the boy…”
Quirrell clapped his hands and the ropes she was holding fell off, she growled protectively as Harry slowly got to his feet. “Call off your little lion friends and come here.” Quirrell said, “Look in the mirror and tell me what you see.”
“Stay,” Harry commanded her and Kade. She could sense that he only said that so Quirrell would think he’s won. She sat down, pretending that she was just a dumb obedient dog, growling at Kade to do the same. When her brother finally huffed and sat down, Harry started walking towards Quirrell. He better do something smart, Cat thought as Quirrell moved close behind him. She watched as Harry closed his eyes, stepped in front of the mirror of Erised, and opened them again.
“Well?” Quirrell said, sounding very impatient. After a while, she heard Harry say, “I see myself shaking hands with Dumbledore,” So that’s his plan? “I—I’ve won the House Cup for Gryffindor.”
He really thinks he can get out of this easily. Cat thought as the twins both stood up, Quirrell cursed before looking frightened when he saw that Cat and Kade were walking towards Harry.
“Get out of the way,” said Quirrell both frightened and impatient. She walked faster towards Harry and nudged the stone from the outside of his pocket. Harry seemed to immediately know what she was trying to say and put his hand into his pocket. Cat opened her mouth and Harry put the blood-red stone in her mouth. Her lion-form’s mouth was just big enough to fit the stone inside it without looking suspicious. And although it wasn’t a huge stone, it still made her mouth a little sore.
“He lies… He lies…”
“Potter, come back here!” Quirrell shouted at Harry as Cat laid down next to Kade, the stone sitting uncomfortably in her mouth. “Tell me the truth! What did you just see?”
She heard the high voice speak again. “Let me speak to him… face-to-face…”
“Master,” Who’s he talking to? she growled to Kade, and he responded with a confused purr, “you are not strong enough!”
The high voice spoke again. “I have strength enough… for this…”
She watched as Quirrell began to unwrap his turban and almost screamed when the man turned around. Instead of seeing the back of Quirrell’s head, there was a face, a terrible face she felt she had seen before. Why does that face look familiar, Cat? Kade growled quietly to her. The face was as white as chalk, with glaring red eyes. He had slit nostrils, like a snake.
She growled loudly when the face whispered, “Harry Potter….” The face ignored her growl and continued saying, “See what I have become?” Afraid of what he was going to do to Harry, she nudged her brother and slowly got up. “Mere shadow and vapor….” She and her twin started slowly walking towards Harry, never looking away from the face. “I have form,—” Wonder where it went.
“—only when I can share another’s body….” So he shares Quirrell’s body. Cat thought as her and her brother's hearts started pounding loudly in their ears again. She could see the face’s mouth still moving but couldn’t hear a thing he said. She saw Harry leap towards the flame door and, acting on instinct, the twins pounced on Quirrell, pinning him to the ground. Kade growled loudly at Quirrell as Harry put his hand under Cat's mouth.
She opened her mouth and let the stone drop into his hand before the twins’ hearts slowed down again. They got off of Quirrell and Kade bit his leg when he tried to hurt Cat. Harry reached his hand out and touched Quirrell. The man screamed in pain as he backed away, Cat, who could hear again, growling and backing away from the sudden noise. Harry realized he could use this to his advantage and went up to Quirrell, grabbing his face. Quirrell’s screaming hurt Cat’s ears but she ran up to him and dug her fangs into his good leg anyway.
At some point the screaming stopped and Harry fell to the ground. She watched as Quirrell turned into dust before everything went dark, the last thing she saw was black smoke in the shape of a tiger in front of her.
