Chapter 10, A Very Thoughtful Christmas.
Chapter 10
Every night since they had found the mirror, she would think about what their parents told them before they abandoned her and Kade. She also couldn’t stop thinking about the plan she, Kade, Harry, Ron, and Hermione had come up with to get down into the secret room. When Harry found out when their enemy was going to break in, he would go to Cat and Kade on the day their enemy would be there, and say, “Tonight”. Cat was then supposed to say, “I’ll be there”, and sneak out with Kade that night to hide in a classroom until they saw the other three arrive under the invisibility cloak that, for some reason, Cat and Kade could see through and the rest was to be figured out along the way. She was finally talking to Malfoy again after she had explained why she wasn’t able to talk to him, he had told her that it was ok and hugged her when she started to tear up. It was now two weeks before Christmas and Cat and Kade couldn’t wait to see their family again.
She’d missed her dad the most since he was always at work before she woke up but now she knew he had the next few weeks off so she would get to spend lots of time with him before school started again. She and Kade were sitting on a staircase, watching Hagrid as he carried a huge tree inside the Great Hall to place it wherever it would fit. Just then she realized that she hadn’t gotten anything for any of her friends. After realizing this, she hurried down to the dungeon, leaving Kade, and stopped at a wall and mumbled, “Mumble wumble.” The wall opened and Cat ran into the girls dormitories. Once she was at her trunk, she opened it and pulled out a bunch of art supplies that she packed for occasions like this.
She made Harry a small sculpture of his snowy barn owl, Hedwig, Ron a miniature nimbus 2000, Hermione an organizer with her favorite stickers all over it, and Malfoy a stuffed dragon. Once she was done with these, she set Harry’s sculpture aside so it could dry and wrapped Hermione, Malfoy, and Ron’s presents. She had bought her gift for Kade before they left for Hogwarts so it was already pre-wrapped back at their house, along with the rest of her family’s present’s. After Harry’s sculpture dried, she put it in a box, carefully wrapping the box, then wrote her name and who they were for on the now wrapped gifts. When she was finally done, she carefully slid them under her bed. Since her hands were covered in dried clay, glue, and paint, she walked out into the dungeon hall and up to the girls bathroom to wash her hands.
It was now a week before Christmas and Cat was making sure she had everything she needed packed and ready to go. When she was done checking to see if she left anything behind, she went upstairs with Kade to start heading to the station with the other witches and wizards also going home for the holidays. Grabbing her trunk after McGonagall waved her wand, making all the trunks of the people there appear, she and Kade followed everyone to Hogsmeade station. Now at home, her mother had decorated the house to look more like a gingerbread house rather than an actual house, which Cat was barely able to admire from how tired she was. As soon as she walked in the door, she went up stairs into her and Kade’s room, and fell asleep while her twin went straight to the kitchen to find something to eat. On Christmas, Cat went downstairs, Kade following her sleepily, into the sofa room to see a whole bunch of presents under the tree.
She immediately spotted one from Malfoy. It was in a rectangular box, wrapped in purple wrapping paper with a large green bow in the middle of it. Inside was the most beautiful dress Cat had ever seen. It was a short dark purple lace-up back dress and with the dress was a bright green bow. Hermione got her an organizer with pictures of cats all over it, and Ron had gotten her a book about Quidditch. Harry got her a letter saying that he forgot to get her a gift, but would give her something when she got back.
Kade had gotten a box of coal from Malfoy, Hermione had gotten him a new quill, Ron got him a bunch of his duplicate cards that you can collect from chocolate frogs, and Harry also gave him a letter. After a day of opening gifts and drinking eggnog, Cat went up to her room and wrote in her diary,
Dear diary,
It’s been a while since I last wrote, I have so many things I want to write about, but I’ll just write about today instead. Today’s Christmas and my friends got me such thoughtful and lovely gifts. Hermione gave me an organizer (I also got her one too, what a coincidence), Ron got me a book about quidditch, and Malfoy gave me a pretty dark purple short lace-up back dress and a green hair bow to go with it. The dress Malfoy gave me is a bit big but I still love it anyway. Harry sent a letter to me saying that he would give me something after I got back since he forgot before I left. Well I better get to bed now.
I’ll write again soon, I promise I’ll take you to Hogwarts with me when we go back.
Signing out, Cat Brooks
