The Vanishing Cabinet

Chapter 8

At night, she slowly walked out of the Dormitory and Common Room. Thankfully, Albert, Olivia and Isabell didn’t notice her leaving since they were too focused on completing their essay for Snape. She went up to the seventh floor. She suddenly bumped into someone. She couldn’t clearly see who it was, but she slightly recognised the voice.

‘Hey! Watch it!’ the person said.

‘Who’s there? Lumos!’

A light emerged from Amelia’s wand, showing an extremely good-looking, brown-haired, teenage boy, sixteen, with grey eyes.

‘OH! Hey! Haven’t seen you in a long time!’ Amelia said.

The boy grinned. Amelia and the boy stared at each other.

‘You’ve changed,’ said the boy, looking at Amelia.

‘Meaning?’

‘You’re more beautiful.’

‘So I wasn’t beautiful before?’ said Amelia, grinning.

‘You were! I meant-’

Amelia laughed.

‘I know. But I really have to go do something. It was nice seeing you though. Maybe we can meet up sometime.’

‘Right. See you.’

Amelia nodded and walked away to the seventh floor. She went and faced an empty wall.

I need somewhere where I could find lost objects to find many secrets.

I need somewhere where I could find lost objects.

I need somewhere…

A door started appearing in front of her. When it fully formed, she opened the door quietly and entered. There were towers and towers of lost objects and items. She then heard a soft voice.

‘No… He will kill me…’

Amelia walked forwards and towards the source of the voice.

‘WHO’S THERE?’ the voice yelled.

Amelia stopped moving. She got her wand and walked cautiously. She spotted another wand pointing at her.

‘Lumos!’ Amelia whisper-shouted.

‘Amelia?’

‘Draco?’

Amelia was facing Draco, his face glowing from the light. He put back his wand and started rummaging through a tower of objects.

‘What are you doing?’ Amelia asked as Draco stood in front of something that was covered with a dirty grey sheet.

‘Nothing.’

Amelia made the sheet fall off the object. It seemed to be a broken cabinet.

‘What’s this?’

Draco suddenly drew his wand and pinned Amelia to a black wall. His nose almost touched hers.

‘Don’t tell anyone about this. Or he’ll kill you, and he’ll kill me.’

His pale grey eyes focused on the shocked blue ones.

‘This is your secret mission, isn’t it?’ Amelia whispered.

‘I have to do it, or t-the Dark Lord murders me and my family.’ replied Draco, still looking at her blue eyes.

‘So, you were assigned to do a mission by Voldemort?’

‘Don’t say the name!’ yelled Draco as he immediately held her throat.

Realising what he did, he quickly let go of her. Amelia was panting as she looked at Draco, who was facing the broken cabinet.

‘What are you doing here anyways?’ Amelia asked.

‘I should ask you the same question,’ Draco said coldly as he examined the cabinet closely. ‘I thought I told you that I don’t need any assistance.’

‘I came here to find something, until I saw you.’

Draco ignored her.

‘I can help, you know, with whatever you're doing,’ said Amelia, brushing dust off the cabinet.

Draco drew his wand again and pinned her to the wall. This time, he looked scared.

‘I told you, he’ll kill you. It’s enough that I saw your dead mother. She was so kind to me…’ Draco said, looking down.

He shook his head and looked at Amelia. She looked at him in shock and sadness. He let go of her.

‘Leave!’ he said suddenly.

‘I-’

‘LEAVE!’

But instead of leaving, Amelia drew her wand.

‘Let me help!’ she yelled.

‘Don’t you see? I’m being punished for what my father did! I never wanted to do this! He forced me! And if I fail, he’ll kill my family and me! Including you, if you don’t leave this instant!’

He was breathing heavily.

‘That’s why I want to help! I appreciate your nobility but you’re being punished for something your father did!’

Draco didn’t say anything. He walked towards the cabinet.

‘Y-you might be able to help.’

Amelia arched her eyebrows.

‘This can’t be your only mission, Draco, it’s got to be for a reason…’

She examined the cabinet.

‘This is a Vanishing Cabinet. It’s broken. There is a twin cabinet in Burgin and Burke’s.’

‘So, you want to fix it because you need something from Burgin and Burke’s?’ Amelia asked as she continued to examine the cabinet. ‘That’s what you were looking at in that shop?

‘How’d you know?’ Draco asked fiercely.

‘Harry, Ron, Hermione, Olivia, Albert, Isabell and I might have eavesdropped on your conversation with Mr. Borgin, the shop owner… But nobody else knows, they swore to me that they won’t say one single word to anybody. But… I think Harry might have told Mr. Weasley all about the eavesdropping and asked for the Ministry to check your house and possibly rummage through everything to find any secrets. It’s all in the Daily Prophet-’

Draco wasn’t even listening to her, so that she was basically talking to air.

‘Maybe. But I don’t know how to fix it,’ Draco answered Amelia’s first question.

Draco shook his head slightly and sighed.

‘I know how to fix it, but you have to tell me the reason you want to fix this.’

Draco shuddered.

‘I’ll tell you when the time comes,’ he said hastily, not looking at Amelia.

‘No, you’ll tell me now!’

‘You need to go, before anyone discovers we’re here,’ Draco said, pointing Amelia towards the door. ‘Go, now.

He said the last word sharply and Amelia stopped resisting. She walked slowly towards the door. She gave Draco one last look.

Fine. But I will help, eventually.’
