Now, let's have a look at some LGBTQ+ news! In today's issue, a ten-day sit-in is happening in Seattle, and things might be looking bad for the LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia.
On May 23, the board of trustees of the Christian Seatle Pacific University (SPU) voted to uphold a policy that prohibits "sexual behaviour that is inconsistent with the university's understanding of Biblical standards, including cohabitation, extramarital sexual activity, and same-sex sexual activity." The next day, May 24, students and staff had a walk-out and a protest, and then started a sit-in outside of the office of the universit president. So far, the sit-in has been going for ten days straight (24 hours a day!). Let's hope that this will encourage SPU to take down their homophobic policy. Learn more about this here!
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, lawmakers are reforming the criminal code of Indonesia, and there's concern that the reforms will criminalize more types of behavior--including same-sex relationships. Currently, Indonesia has pretty much no laws around same-sex couples--marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman, but it's not currently illegal to engage in same-sex activity. Indonesia's coordinating security affairs minister, Mhammad Mahfud MD, tweeted, "There is no LGBTQ wording in the RKUHP [the Indonesian criminal code]. But there are threats for offenses against decency and same-sex intercourse in certain situations and ways. Same as there is no word 'thief' in the criminal code, but there are acts of taking other people's things unlawfully." Hopefully these worries turn out to be false. Learn more about this here.
Well, that's all for the news today!
