It's the third day of Pride
Month! To celebrate today,
we'll be taking to the gardens.
Kind of.
So, as I'm sure most
of you are aware, there have
been several different symbols
of queerness throughout
history that LGBTQ+ people
would use to signal to other
LGBTQ+ people that they were
also queer (this is known as
"flagging"). Well, three of
those symbols were flowers:
the lavender, the green
carnation, and the violet.
Lavenders and violets have
the same origins: Sappho's
poetry. One poem in particular
spoke of "many crowns of
violets." Violets became a
symbol for lesbians (and
later, sapphics in general)
in the 1920s because of this
poem. Meanwhile, "lavender
lad" was a derogatory term
for gay men around that time.
Butin July 1969, during a march
fromWashington Square Park to
Stonewall Inn in NYC (to
celebrate the Stonewall Riots,
which had happened just a month
earlier), lavender sashes and
armbands were handed out to
marchers--and basically from
then on, lavenders became a
symbol of gay empowerment.
The green carnation, on the other
hand, has its "roots" (haha) in
Oscar Wilde, who told some
of his friends to wear green
carnations in their lapels. From
then on, putting green
carnations in lapels became a
way for gay men to signal to
other gay men that they were, in
fact, gay.
So, all this is to say, today's
LGBTQIAdvent task is to put some
sort of green carnation, violet, or
lavender-themed thing somewhere!
This could mean drawing one
of these flowers, putting them in your
HiH bio, or any other way you
can think of to incorporate a
lavender, violet, or green
carnation into your day! Happy
Pride!!
