Detention

Chapter 21

Detention

‘Detention on your first day, huh?’ was Draco’s first thing to say as soon as they left the dungeons.

‘Perfect,’ Olivia said ironically.

‘You set a world record, an achievement,’ smirked Draco.

The next morning, the girls apologised to each other and became friends once again. Well, almost, only Amelia and Olivia.

‘Good luck,’ sighed Amelia as the sun shone across the room.

‘Well, I better get going, don’t wanna be late on my first day of detention,’ Olivia said as bade Amelia and the awakened Ravenclaws goodbye.

Isabell followed Olivia out of the dormitory and down the stairs. They then reached the dungeons which looked dustier than usual. Isabell and Olivia entered the Potion Master’s office. They found Snape waiting for them, sitting on his chair in front of his unpolished desk.

‘You are 2 minutes late,’ said Snape coldly.

‘Good morning sir,’ yawned Isabell.

Snape ignored her. He assigned them a quite challenging punishment. They were to organise potions alphabetically. The bottles weren’t labelled. That made it difficult for the girls. They were allowed to, however, get a book and identify the type of potion, which eased the task a little bit. But still, it remained hard.

‘What’s this potion?’ asked Olivia quietly.

Apparently, Isabell thought Olivia was asking her.

‘Do I look like I know?’ snapped Isabell.

‘Whatever,’ said Olivia angrily as she ordered a few potions.

‘I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that,’ apologised Isabell. ‘It’s just my dad will be super disappointed in me, and something happened at home…’

‘I said whatever,’ Olivia muttered.

‘Enough of the talking,’ said Snape coldly as he flicked through an ancient looking book.

It took them about 2 hours to sort the shelves, they were sweating and tired. But they still accomplished hard work. They felt proud. They high-fived each other happily; they forgot that they were mad at each other.

‘You may leave,’ said Snape, still not looking at the girls.

‘Well, good that’s over with,’ said Olivia cheerfully after going to the Great Hall to sit with Amelia, but no one was there.

‘Oh no! We missed breakfast,’ groaned Isabell.

‘Quick! It’s Herbology now!’ Olivia yelled as they rushed to the Greenhouse.

Amelia spotted them running towards the Greenhouse and grinned.

‘I saved you some sandwiches,’ said Amelia to Olivia and ignored Isabell, who continued to mumble hungrily.

‘It’s alright,’ said Olivia. ‘We’re friends now.’

‘Oh good, I wanted you to get detention anyways,’ Amelia said apologetically.

‘What? Why?’ questioned Isabell angrily.

‘For you two to get along!’ Amelia said.

‘Enough talking there!’ yelled Professor Sprout, their Herbology teacher.

She was wearing ear muffs.

‘Uh… why is she wearing-’ Olivia began.

‘We’re learning about Mandrakes today, does anyone know what they are?’ asked Professor Sprout, almost answering Olivia’s question.

Isabell, Amelia and Hermione’s hands all shot up immediately.

‘Yes, Ms?’ Professor Sprout said as she pointed her finger towards Hermione’s direction.

‘Hermione Granger,’ said Hermione, face pink. ‘Mandrakes, also known as Mandragora, is a magical and sentient plant which has a root that looks like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows). When mature, its cry could be fatal to any person who hears it.’

‘Great job Ms. Granger,’ said Professor Sprout. ‘Ten points to Gryffindor.’

‘Right students, for homework I would like you to write a simple three inch essay about mandrakes, due next lesson!’

Herbology was very interesting and joyful, not as much as charms though, which was their next lesson after that. While they were walking to the charms class Isabell said she wanted to tell them something.
