Now, welcome back to the final segment of A Gay's Gaze; Reader's Digest! The fanfiction I'm recommending this week actually lines up very well with the LGBTQ+ headcanon we had today.
Today, I'd like to recommend Raised in War and Love by On_Every_Spectrum on Ao3 (Archive of Our Own). This beautiful fanfiction follows the life story of Ginny Weasley.
The summary is:
"'Ginny Weasley was born into a world at war and a family filled with love. She was greeted joyfully by a community that needed cause for joy.'
"Ginny was the first girl born into the Weasley family in three generations. This is the story of how she grew up."
In this story, we get to watch Ginny (who is a trans girl) grow up, from the moment she was born through marriage, all alongside her best friend, Luna Lovegood.
Something I really liked about this fanfic was that it never misgenders Ginny, even before she comes out. I think that that's really respectful to her identity (even though she's only a fictional character), and a nice touch to the fic. Also, Luna is nonbinary, and her coming out is written absolutely amazingly and in a way that really fits her character!
But in terms of the actual story, Raised in War and Love was beautiful. On_Every_Spectrum manages to make you get teary about a story you already know the end to--a sign of truly amazing writing.
One of my favorite parts of this fanfiction was how Luna's mother's death was written, and how that shaped the way she is when we meet her in OotP. I never considered Luna's distant, dreamy manner to have roots in tragedy--until I read this fanfiction, and it tore me apart.
All in all, I very highly recommend Raised in Love and War! It's beautiful writing, very emotional, and has great trans representation. At a manageable 3,726 words, I think everyone should read this.
Well, that's all for this week's issue of A Gay's Gaze at Hogwarts! I hope you enjoyed! Please remember to:
