Herbology 101: Lesson 6 Basic Blooms: Part II

Chapter 7

Herbology Lesson 6
Silverweed/Potentilla Anserina/Argentina anserilla:
Silverweed needs the soil to be slightly alkaline/basic with a PH a little bit over 7. The plant fares well in most types of sunlight, as long as it's not planted in full shade, and can be watered daily. Overall, an easy plant to look after. Silverweed is used in the sore-removing potion and the flowers seem to have some sort of blemish-removing effect (although there is still testing needed as there are some unfortunate side effects)

This plant will need to be dried to be used, as it's usually ground up. Therefore it's best to harvest it on a dry day, so the plant isn't soaked by rain. Plants can be dried by hanging it in a dry, heated area, but there are also magic means.

Nettle/Urtica Dioica:

This plant is covered in fine hairs, that sting when you touch them. the plants fares best in neutral/slightly alkaline soil (PH 7.1 to 7.8), and either full or partial sun. This plant requires you to wear your dragonhide gloves.

If you plan on drying the plant to be used, make sure to harvest it before it blooms (before May/June). Fresh nettles (not dried) are used in a cure for boils. The leaves and stem can be helpful against respiratory problems (like asthma) and are used in hair tonics (Do you think lucius Malfoy uses them?).

Nettles have a history in potion making. They used to be used in the healing potion: Anglo-Saxon nine herbs charm (potion with incantation). It was also part of the Lacnunga manuscript as a way to prevent infection and poison.

Motherwort/Leonurus Cardiaca:

Motherwort is an aggresive type of weed that will take over the garden if you let it. It grows well in most circumstances, but best in slightly alkaline soil (7.4-7.8 PH). The flowers are used to speed up childbirth and can safely be taken by pregnant women. It can also be used in potions for hearth/anxiety problems, and is part of an old remedie against Rabies (hydrophobia)

Fluxweed/tansy mustard:
This plant prefers full sunlight and dry conditions, it can grow in soil with a ph between 4,5 and 9,0. It is used in polyjuice potion, potions for dystentry and diarrhea.
