Herbology 101: Lesson 4 There's Magic in All of Us

Chapter 5

Herbology Lesson 4
Differentiating magical plants from non-magical plants:
Non-magical plants are used by witches and wizards as well, sometimes they're necessary in potions, eventhough the plants doesn't have magical properties. Non-magical does not mean inffective. For a plant to be considered magical they need to either:
1. Exhibit odd behavior (unnatural movement/growth, diet or actions that implicate sentience)

2. Have unique abilities (give abilities to humans that aren't usually theirs, for example gillyweed; strange abilities like defying gravity, suddenly catching fire or mimicing speech).

(does that mean a Venus Flytrap is magical too? They can move at will and have the unique ability to digest meat?)

Sentience
Magical plants can have sentience, whereas non-magical plants cannot. Sentience is the ability to feel and be aware of your surroundings. (Like the whomping willow, it senses people and tries to hit them.. don't go too close).

Non-magical plants are more predictable because they are less reactive (less volatile= less chance potion goes boom).

Roses
A shrub that can grow to 20 ft high, and 2-4 ft in all directions. Roses are non-magical, but have medicinal properties (40). They are used in potions for:
Coughing, wheezing, the common cold, fevers, the flu, diarrhea, kidney function, stomach aches , and menstrual pains. The properties of roses are used in potions but also by applicating the rose itself. The properties can change in combination with other ingredients and differs in how the plant is prepared/used.

Rosa Carolina (The Wild Rose)
The Wild Rose is the most common variant of Roses. It needs partial to full sunlight and neutral to mildly acidic soil (between 5.5 to 7.0 ph). Dragon dung should be added to the soil for it's nutrients, and will help the rose interact more with magic. Roses need quite a bit of water, but don't water it everyday. Water it every once in a while, and make sure to use a lot so the water reaches the deep roots. The pot will need a drainage whole because of this. This way the excess water can drip away, while the water has reached the roots properly. It is recommended to use dragonhide gloves when handling roses, because of their thorns.
