Chapter 15 - The Demon

Chapter 15

December 21st 2022 3:00 A.M.

I started to violently shake as the demon slowly walked towards the three of us as it once again boomed, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOME?!”

Oli was the first to speak, “We came back to free our friend from the Void.  He was stuck here after Tarik,” she gestured towards me, “Jenna, and myself left.  He got thrown out of the circle so he wasn’t able to come with us.  What do we need to do to leave and be set free from you, O Great One?”

The demon laughed, its huge shoulders bouncing up and down.  As it finally calmed down it said, “I assume you know who I am?”

“Indeed.” Oli responded softly as she eyed the demon, “You are The Demon King Zalworg.”

“Indeed.” The demon whispered as he leaned on his huge sword.  The sword was bright gold with a silver hilt.  The edges were jagged and it looked as though a ten year old had carved and made it in ten minutes.  It was not good craftsmanship but it was still a very beautiful sword.  As the demon leaned on it, the red sun lit up the hilt to make it shine a bright bronze.  The sword was a really beautiful work of art but it would not hold up well in a battle for your life.

I whispered, “Where did you find such a beautiful sword?”

Zalworg smiled as he swiftly grabbed the blade and swiped it to land just an inch in front of me. “You mean this?” He questioned.

“Ye-e-es!” I stuttered.

“The king of Olaga.  The Invisible Kingdom a little over thirty miles off the west coast of Spain.  Let’s just say,” his eyes glowed a fiery red, “It was a rather….fiery exchange!  HAHAHA!”

We all stood there, petrified by the power flowing off of Zalworg.  It wouldn’t stop.  I was the first to fall to my knees from the weight of the power.  Then Malachi fell to one knee and Oli was just barely able to stay standing.  The demon watched as we crumbled one by one under his power.

“We can’t do anything for you if you take us away.” Oli told the demon.

“Why would I…..want YOU….to do something…..for ME?!” The demon roared.

“We can get you what you want most.” Malachi groaned from the ground as he forced himself to look up. “A home, a friend, and a family.”

The demon struggled for a minute.  Zalworg couldn’t believe what he was hearing.  These humans would help…him?  “How?” The demon inquired, leaning forward.

“Simple, you let us leave, we come back with what you want.  It is a win for all four of us.” Malachi said.

The demon seems to be considering it, “On one condition.”

Oli nods.

“You, all three of you, will tie your life forces to me.”

We all looked at each other obviously very fearful because the demon was threatening our lives.  We all looked at the demon but could find nothing but the truth of the condition in his expression.  The demon showed us exactly what could happen whenever you come into the Void and it didn’t make any of us feel better.

“Can we talk, O Great One?” Oli asked.

“Three minutes.  That’s all I will give.” He said as he turned away.

Oli looked in disgust at the demon before moving over to us.  Thankfully, at that point the demon stopped his power from making us crumple to the ground.  “I think we should do it.  It’s the only way to get out of here.”

“We could attack him.” Malachi said, “He isn’t paying attention right now.”

“NO!” Oli exclaimed. “Have you not heard the stories?” She then whispered as she glanced fearfully at the demon.

“No.” Malachi and I said at the same time.

“It goes something like this:

The Demon Sings at night,

Every bird flies in fright,

Every animal runs awry,

Every creature howls in fear,

Every plant moves its roots,

Every fish holds its breath,

Every human cries out,

As the demon hunts humanity down.

“No way am I listening to a silly poem, we were caught by a deadly demon and all you can do is recite a poem.” Malachi said as he looked back over at the demon.

“I think we should do it.  The demon must honor his word.” I said. “Within the code, demon’s have to honor their word or the code of demons will take their life.”

“I guess that is meeting adjourned then.  Zalworg,” Oli called as the demon turned, “We will do it.”

He held out his left hand to Oli and his right hand to Malachi.  I then grabbed Malachi’s and Oli’s empty hands.  The demon watched the sword as it flew up into the air and started spinning before pointing at the place where my hand met Malachi’s before coming to a rest, hovering in the middle of our circle.

Zalworg looked at us momentarily in shock, “Love.” Was the demon's last word before the three of us were transported out of the Void and back into the meeting room.

“What did that mean?” I groaned as I sat up. “Love?  Why was the greatest demon ever talking about love?”

“Whatever are you talking about, Tarik?  You just got back from the Void and you are talking about love?” Jenna said incredulously.

Tasha ran over to me and hugged me so hard.  She started crying and telling me that she thought we were all gone forever and that the demon would get us because it hunts humanity.  She recited the same poem although a little differently from Oli:

The Demon Sings at night,

Every bird flies in fright,

Every animal runs awry,

Every amphibian runs in the trees,

Every creature howls in fear,

Every cloud drifts away,

Every plant moves its roots,

Every fish holds its breath,

Every human cries out,

And the moon shows its full form,

As the demon hunts humanity down.”  She said, “We can’t lose you guys.  I can’t lose you guys.”  She just kept crying softly as when she recited the poem.

“What does it mean if Zalworg’s sword pointed at where Malachi and I were holding hands to finish the circle?  What does that mean?”

Tasha paled.  “There is another verse, far less known but far more important than the first:

The Demon’s sword is golden,

It’s hilt made of silver,

It sees the good in humans,

And shows it to the demon,

The demon hates not all humans,

But those that control magic,

He finds the magic doers,

And gives them the fate they deserve.

“That still doesn’t answer my question though.” I said.

“Then listen to the combined poem Tarik.  Listen and learn:

The Demon Sings at night,

Every bird flies in fright,

Every animal runs awry,

Every amphibian runs in the trees,

Every creature howls in fear,

Every cloud drifts away,

Every plant moves its roots,

Every fish holds its breath,

Every human cries out,

And the moon shows its full form,

As the demon hunts humanity down.

The Demon’s sword is golden,

It’s hilt made of silver,

It sees the good in humans,

And shows it to the demon,

The demon hates not all humans,

But those that control magic,

He finds the magic doers,

And gives them the fate they deserve.

The demon shows you your fate,

Whether electric or not,

He shows love, grief, and perseverance,

And uses these to show who deserves life,

And who deserves their unfortunate fate.

“Oh.  I see.  So does that mean?” I was so confused.  I looked at her in obvious pain because it hurt to think too deeply and this requires some pretty deep thinking.

“Yes.  He believes that you and Malachi are destined to be together, Tarik.  It is that simple.” Tasha replied.

“I’m sorry.  WHAT???” I exclaimed.  “There is no way he meant that.  He is a demon for the love of God!”

“I think that really is what he meant.” Malachi said softly.

I tried to speak.  My mouth moved but no sound could come out.

Malachi interjected quickly, “I mean, think about it, he wants love.  That’s what he dreams about.  And then we go and tell him that we will get him what he wants and then he is pointing at us as an example.  Our friendship, not actual love.  If we didn’t have our friendship then the sword would never have pointed at our joined hands.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, “Ahh, yes, of course.  That makes so much more sense now.”

Tasha glares at me.  She rolls her eyes in a manner that has me wondering whatever I had done to get her to do that to me.  Not that I really care or anything but I still wonder.

“What is the matter with you?” I asked her.

“You just ruined your one chance.  The one chance you had and you just threw it out the window.”

“Chance for what?” I asked.

“You know what for.” Tasha responded.

“I really don’t though.”

“I think she thinks that it still means we are supposed to be together.” Malachi said.  “She needs to calm down on that because it is just the friendship aspect.”

“I still think it’s that and that you ruined your chance, Tarik.  You ruined your one chance!”

“He did not.” Victoria marched up to us, her hair flying behind her. “They may belong together but you mustn't force it.  Their friendship is perfect and I'm sure they wouldn’t want to ruin that.”

Tasha was silent.  She realized that there was nothing she could do at that point.  They were all wearing their expressions of stone which were only used whenever they didn’t agree or whenever they already had a decision made.  It made Tasha sad that I wasn’t listening to her but there was nothing that she could do about it at this point for I had already made up my mind.

The next thing I said confirmed what Tasha had been thinking, “I am standing upon solid ground here, Tasha.  I will not give it up just so that you can be right.  I am trying my best to hold myself together so I need you to help me do that.  I don’t need you to tell me that I cannot do it.”

Tasha glared at me, her eyes crinkling in anger and hostility as she said, “You are on thin ice here, brother.  Extremely thin ice.  I will tell you how I feel and that will be that whether you like it or not, I really don’t care.”

“If I speak, I mean it.  Whether on thin ice or not, I mean it.” I answered her.

Tasha turned away from me, her face a dark purple color as she slowly exhaled and looked Malachi in the eye, “He does like you.  We can all tell.  Even if you both are too naive for that, that does not mean that the rest of us are the same way.”

“I understand.” I said as I put a map down, “We will have to travel through the Woodland Elves' land in order to reach the tomb.”

“Indeed we must.” Marcellus said, “Sabrina, I need you to be as safe as possible.  Do you think that you should maybe stay here?”

I instantly grew pale in outrage, “Absolutely not!” I replied to him. “I cannot believe that you would even ask something like that of me!”

“I’m just trying to keep you safe!” I argue.

“I feel like you just don’t want me in the way!” I exclaimed. “You want everything to go just the way you want it to or else it isn’t good enough.  I don’t want everything to go that way because normally that means that something bad happens in some way, shape, or form and I really don’t feel like dealing with that right now, okay?”

Marcellus looked at me with a confused look in his eyes as he replied, “Understood, however, I don’t want you to get hurt!  That is why I want you to stay here and look after the kids!”

I sigh before giving in, “I will stay.  As long as you can promise me that you will stay safe and not do anything rash then I will let you go by yourself.  I have no problem with that as long as you try to actively keep yourself safe.”

“I can’t give you any promises, Sabrina.” Marcellus replied.

I looked at him in annoyance.  I can’t believe how awful he is being!  This is just him trying to protect me because I am his wife, I know that for sure, but there is definitely something else going on as well. “Then I will go and you will stay here.  After all, I have the Magyk of visions and you do not.”

“I can protect myself though!” Marcellus protested.

“And I cannot?” I whispered as I questioned him.

For a split second his features appeared panicked.  All he did after that was quickly agree to let me go alone, along with Brianna.  I think it will be good for Brianna and Tarik to be able to talk together at some point.

“Fine.” Marcellus said. “Don’t get hurt or I will never forgive myself.  Remember, I did my best to get you to stay here and you did not listen to my warnings.  I tried my best.”

I glared at him before walking to the window and seeing another shooting star.  I wished for a good and safe journey alongside Brianna and that we would both make it home safe alongside everyone else as well.

“I don’t think that any of us are naive here.” Malachi protested. “I think that we all just need to think a little more before we speak and offend someone or something like that.”

“I agree.” I replied. “We cannot just say whatever because then we are exposing ourselves to the general public.”

Tasha looked at me before saying, “Tarik, you only get one life.  One opportunity to do it right.  One opportunity to fall in love.  Many opportunities to make mistakes or even die.  You must admit it before something happens to one of you and then someone lives with many regrets.”

Oli looked over at me, “Not everything has to be kept a secret.  Whatever it is that is weighing you down, we all can help you through it.  All you have to do now is tell us so that we can actually help you.”

Malachi looked at me, a look of curiosity on his face, “You know, she may be right.  Nobody wants to have regrets now do they?  Imagine if you are the one with all of the regrets?  How would you feel?”

“I wouldn’t be doing well in life at that point.” I replied. “Maybe it is better to say everything instead of live with regrets.”

“I would say to get it all out if I were you guys.” Oli said. “I have so much I wish I had told Malachi before I was put in the Void but I managed to hold out.  I can still tell him but I will, of course, regret not telling him sooner.”

“What?” Malachi asked. “You…..have regrets, Oli?”

“Not now, Malachi,” Oli said, “I am planning on telling you once we have everything figured out.  Until then, however, you must wait and be informed later.  I cannot have you worrying about all of my things whenever we still haven’t figured this part out yet.”

“Okay.” Malachi looked hurt but he said, “I understand.  I can wait until we have all figured everything out.”

“Good,” Oli said quickly, “Now, onto other matters.  We need to talk about the Void.  We need to change it and reinforce it.  It isn’t strong enough to hold Zalworg anymore.”

I looked at her in surprise before speaking, “What do you mean it isn’t strong enough anymore?  It looked the same when I was just there as it did whenever we all first created the Void to begin with!”

“No,” Oli is obviously trying her best to explain but to no avail, “Whenever we all left there were cracks all throughout the Void and even more were coming.  Being there for years has that effect on you.  You can see things wrong with the Void immediately.”

“No,” I said, unwilling to believe what she was telling me.  I can’t believe it because we created the Void so there was no way that it was crumbling.

“I’m sorry but it is whether you like it or not.” Oli said.

I still couldn’t believe it but I was going to let her believe that I did.  For now, at least.  I try hard to help my friends but whenever they are unwilling to be helped then it is completely pointless to try and do anything to actually help them.

I still tried, and tried, and tried some more, but got nothing out of it.  None of them believed me still and it is so infuriating!

“Why is this happening then?” I asked her.

“Zalworg penetrated the ground with his sword.  Doing so created the cracks that have now spread throughout the entirety of the Void.” Oli replied.

I realized in horror that he must have found the weak spot, “He found the weak spot didn’t he?” I whispered softly.

“Yes.” Oli looked down in despair before saying, “I was with him then.  Before he did it he looked at me and said ‘You can look up in inspiration, down in desperation, but not around for information.’  Then he did it and that was that.”

“Wow, so the Voidis no longer safe then.” I looked at her for confirmation.

“No.  We need to reinforce it or else it could quite literally blow up in our faces and we would all be dead because the demon’s revenge is never a good thing.” Oli said.

We all stared at each other in silence before realizing that we still had something to do.  Malachi decided to take the lead in our planning.  Thankfully he did so or we would all be done for without him.
