Chapter 9

Lesson One

The Wand-Lighting Charm is a simple charm that, when
performed properly, lights up the tip of the caster's wand. Do not confuse the
light emitted for a flame. It is more like a light in the muggle world known as
a flashlight.

The light produced is a light yellow when charged properly.
If you do not charge the spell enough, the light will be white and dimly lit.
Overcharging the spell will cause the light to turn a bright red.

Lumos is not used only for avoiding the dark. You can use it
to safely navigate your way around a dangerous area or foe. There are some
creatures that do not like bright light. Casting this charm is a sure way to
repel them.

To cast Lumos, you must carefully pronounce the incantation,
Loo-mos. The wand movement is simple. Move your wand forward and then move it
up into a backwards loop.

When the time comes to put out your wand, a charm known as
the Wand-Extinguishing Charm is needed. The incantation is Nox, pronounced,
NOCKS. A flick of the wand or slight jab in any direction is all that is needed
for the movement.

Lesson Two

The Verdimillious Charm is a multipurpose spell. It can be
used to find objects hidden by dark magic, used for defense, or to illuminate a
room. The incantation is pronounced vur-duh-MILL-ee-us. The wand movement is a
forward slashing motion or a circular motion above your head depending on its
purpose.

Spongify is the Softening Charm. It does not work on stone or
metal. The wand movement is an “S” motion and the incantation is SPUN-jee-fye.
It turns objects rubbery and slightly bouncy.

Lesson Three

The Dark Arts refer to any magic that is used to cause harm.
This can be in the form of spells, potions, or even breeding dark creatures.
Those who practice the Dark Arts are often seen as being corrupted by the magic.

The Dark Arts are very frowned upon by members of the
wizarding world, but there are no laws which make them illegal. The only
exceptions are the Unforgivable Curses. There are some circumstances in which
the use of Dark Magic has been encouraged. Aurors are often encouraged by the
Ministry to use this type of magic when dueling with their enemies. When they
do, it is usually very powerful magic.

A Jinx is the lowest form of a Dark Spell. They do not cause
much harm and are typically used for practical jokes. Most people would
describe them as irritating, but amusing and not much of an inconvenience.

A Hex is slightly darker than a Jinx is. They often cause
moderate discomfort and are seen as a major inconvenience.

Curses are the darkest and most extreme of Dark Spells. They
cause the recipient extreme discomfort and/or pain. They are long-lasting and
can result in death.

The Curse of the Bogeys is a curse that, when cast properly,
will cause the target to develop an extreme cold. The target will be stuck with
an extremely runny nose until the curse is lifted. If one fails to get this
taken care of, it could cause them to collapse.

The Knockback Jinx does exactly what its name suggests. This
Jinx repels or pushes back whatever the target may be. If the object is of
fragile nature, it may be blasted apart. Should the need ever arise and you use
this in a duel, use it with caution.

Lesson Four

The Department for Regulation and Control of Magical
Creatures are the witches and wizards who are in charge of everything to do
with magical creatures. They work for the Ministry of Magic and are in charge
of categorizing and classifying the creatures in the wizarding world.

There are three categories for the different creatures. They
are:

  • Beast

  • Being

  • Spirit

Within these categories there are the classifications. There
are currently five different classifications:

X-Boring

XX- Harmless

XXX- Competent wizards should cope

XXXX-Dangerous/Requires specialist knowledge

XXXXX- Known wizard killer

An Imp is a creature that can only be found in Britain and
Ireland. They fall under the category of Beast and are classified as XX. Imps
are similar to Pixies in size as they both average around six-eight inches in
height. Other than this, they do not share any similarities. Imps cannot fly.
Their features resemble that of a humanoid. They are bald and their skin is a
dark brown to black in color.

The Bowtruckle is also a beast and is categorized as being
XX. The Bowtruckle can be found in western England, southern Germany, and
certain forests in Scandinavia. They are extremely hard to find though. They
vary in sizes, but they grow no larger than eight inches in height. They have
brown eyes and their skin resembles tree bark. Some people have described them
as  looking like “flat-faced little stickmen made of bark and twigs.” They
also have long sharp fingers which they use as a defense. Their main defense is
their appearance. It serves as a camouflage as their natural habitat is a tree.

Lesson Five

Gnomes are fairly small creatures with a maximum height of
one foot. They have disproportionately large heads and have no hair. Their feet
are hornlike and are very hard. They have tough, brown/tan skin and do not look
anything like the garden gnomes that Muggles place in their yards. Instead,
they are said to resemble a potato. These creatures can be found in Northern
Europe and North America.

Gnomes are classified as XX and are in the beast category.
They have little intelligence, but they have been known to say things such as
“Geroff me” during a de-gnoming. This is how they say, “Get off me.” Other than
this, all they are known to do is grunt, scream, and mutter angrily after being
thrown. This is as far as their intelligence goes. Gnomes are known to scramble
to the surface and watch a de-gnoming happen.

Doxies, also known as the “Biting Fairy,” are found in
Northern Europe and America. This is thought to be because they like cooler
climates. They are a XXX classified beast. Doxies are often mistaken for
fairies, but there are some noticeable differences. While both fairies and
Doxies have small human like forms, the Doxy is covered in thick, black hair.
It also has an extra pair of arms and legs. They have two rows of razor sharp
teeth. A Doxy has wings like a fairy does, but a Doxy’s wings are curved,
thick, and they have a shininess similar to a beetle’s. A Doxy can lay up to
500 eggs at one time. The eggs only take two-three weeks before hatching.

Lesson Six

Hags are classified as sentient beings by the Ministry of
Magic.  They are beings that resemble humans in appearance, but they are
known to be very ugly and old looking with pale skin. According to the
W.O.M.B.A.T, hags only have four toes on each foot. It is common for a hag to
have more warts than the average witch. It is believed that hags have magical
capabilities similar to trolls. Their magic is very rudimentary. It is believed
that Muggles get their view of witches and wizards from hags.

Ghosts are described as being the disembodied spirits of once
living witches and wizards. A person can only become a ghost if they were a
witch or wizard while living. Usually, the magical person is afraid of death
and refuses to move on. Other times, they simply have a strong connection to
the place they haunt and that is what keep them there.

Ghosts are unable to have any kind of physical influence.
They can be seen and appear as a grey/silver apparition of who they were while
living and are transparent.

Due to their lack of physical influence, ghosts have the
ability to fly through solid objects. This causes no harm to the ghost or the
object. They can however, causes disturbances in water, fire, and air. They
also drop the temperature of any immediate area they are in. If there are any
flames nearby when they enter the vicinity, they may turn blue.

Lesson Seven

The fire crab falls under the beast category and is
classified as XXX. While its name suggests that it is a crab, this creature
resembles a large tortoise. It has a grey-green shell that is covered in
jewels. There are a few different variants of this creature. The variants can
be determined by the jewels on its shell. These jewels include rubies,
emeralds, and sapphires. The fire crab has grey skin and black eyes.

There are a few steps to take to avoid infection:

  1. Firstly, get to a safe place. You can’t properly clean the wound
    until you are safe.

  2. Rinse the wound under cool water for 2 minutes.

  3. Wash the bite with soap for 5 minutes.

  4. Let it air dry.

  5. Apply an antibacterial potion and let dry.

  6. Apply a healing potion, such as Essence of Dittany. If you do not
have one, contact the nearest magical medical facility.

  7. Cover the wound with an appropriately sized bandage.

  8. Change the bandage and apply more salve every 4 hours.

  9. A potion to help with pain may be used.
