Chapter 7

Hags
classified as sentient beings by the
Ministry of magic. They resemble humans in appearance, but they are known to be
very ugly, old looking with pale skin, only have 4 toes on each foot, and have
lots of warts. Hags can be found all throughout Europe and Russia.
Occasionally happen upon one while roaming around in Diagon Alley and even more often in Knockturn Alley and some prefer caves to civilization. There are
only two known things that hags eat and that is raw liver and children.

Known hags:

Annis Black – During the late twentieth
century, she lived in a cave in Deadmarsh England. She is known for writing to
the Daily Prophet to complain about hags being portrayed as flesh-eating
monsters by the paper.

Babayaga – During
the medieval times in Russia. Babayaga lived in a hut that stood on chicken
legs. She was known for regularly eating children for breakfast. It is presumed
that she at them for lunch and during tea time as well.

Cordella Misericordia – she lived from
1298-1401. She once represented the hags at the fourteenth century summit of
the Wizards’ council.

Ghosts – the disembodied Spirits of once living witches and wizards.  Usually, the magical person is afraid of
death and refuses to move on or other times they simply have a strong
connection to the place they haunt and that is what keeps them there. They can
fly through solid objects and cause disturbances in water, fire, and air.
If there are any flames nearby when they enter the vicinity, they may turn
blue. They celebrate their deathdays.
Deathdays are often celebrated with parties. They can’t eat so they usually
have rotten food set out. They have or pretend to have the ability to taste
rotten food when they fly through it. One must not ask a ghost how they died.
They are often sensitive questions and will not answer. Ghost are weightless and Indestructible. They can be petrified and can be reversed through
the use of a Mandrake Restorative Draught.

“Wizards can leave an imprint of themselves on
the Earth, to walk paley where their living selves once trod...But very few
choose that path.” -Sir Nicholas De Mimsy-Porpington

Ghosts,
being the imprints of souls, are unable to move beyond the veil. This leaves
them trapped in the living world, forever. Some witches and wizards don’t get the choice, and
it depends on the state of the soul.

FAMOUS GHOSTS:

Sir Nicholas
De Mimsy-Porpington
, also known as Nearly
Headless Nick, is the house ghost for Gryffindor. He became a ghost when he was
“beheaded.” The axe that was used was very dull and did not fully cut off his
head. This is how he got his nickname. He prefers to be called Sir Nicholas. He
can be described as being friendly with the students and staff.

The Fat
Friar
. He is the house ghost of Hufflepuff.
He is often described as being portly and jolly. He has been known to plead on
the behalf of Peeves and try to get him a second chance.

The Bloody
Baron
is the Slytherin house ghost. His
face is gaunt and his robes are stained with blood. He is the only person that
has been known to be able to control Peeves. Most of the school finds him to be
unsocial and creepy. Many are afraid of him. The students that reside in the
Slytherin house often speak differently. They find him friendly and have
regular conversations with him.

Helena
Ravenclaw
is the Ravenclaw house ghost. She
was the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. She is often seen as timid to most of the
school, but she has a very good relationship with the students that reside in
Ravenclaw house. She is especially helpful if the student has lost or mislaid
something.

Though
they are deceased, the Ministry of Magic still holds some amount of control
over them. This was proven when Moaning Myrtle was forced to return to her
place of death and remain there. The Spirit Division in the Department for
Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures are the ones in charge of dealing
with the welfare of ghosts.
