A First Year'S Charms Journal

written by Heather Calvieri

This is the journal I made for Charms class in my first year at Hogwarts. It's here to use as a resource to help you with your studies and to help you get some ideas for your own journals however be sure not to plagiarise my work, it's here as a guide, not a text to copy.

Lesson Two

Chapter 2

For today's practise of fight charms I got out an old doll to practise on. I first practised the hover charm. The outcome of this spell is to make an object hover in mid air. The wand movement for this spell seemed rather difficult so I spent a minute or two beforehand practising with my finger. I then said the word "levioso" while I made an inward spiral with my wand before moving it up, my other hand lightly resting on the doll itself. The result was that the doll hovered about a foot above the table it had been perched on.

The second spell I practised was the floating charm. This spell is used to make an object levitate in a similar way to the hover charm, however no physical contact with the object is needed. I said the incantation "fluito" and jabbed my wand followed by an upward flick. The doll then hovered in as it had done with the hover charm however this time it was three feet above the table as opposed to one foot.

After a quick break to read through the textbook I then practised the rocket charm. The purpose of this charm is to propel an object up in the air and back down again. I performed the spell by saying the words "alarte ascendare" and I gave my wand a quick swish at the end. The doll then propelled upwards and hit the table upon landing. The sudden movement from the doll startled me, especially as my hand was so close to it.

The final spell I practised was the levitation charm. This charm is rather impressive in that it has less height restriction and allows the caster to move the object in any direction they like. I performed this charm by saying the words "wingardium leviosa" and gave my wand a swish and flick. I then found that the doll was levitating five feet above the table and I had control over it's movement. I then proceeded to move it left, right, up and down, before setting it back on the table.

My overall thoughts on this practise was that it was successful however in future I must learn to watch where I keep my hands.
