And now, welcome back to Could it Be?, the weekly LGBTQ+ Harry Potter headcanon review! The headcanon we'll be looking at in this issue is quite fascinating: Trans (FtM) Ron! I know that this might seem a little random at first, but it would make sense for Ron's character, and I think that, at the very least, it's worth considering. 

Personally, the thing that really sells the idea of trans Ron to me is that, canonically, one of Ron's biggest insecurities is that his parents wanted a daughter instead of another son. And while, yes, if a cis person got that in their head, it would probably be an unpleasant thought, it's one of the things Ron is most insecure about.

Ron destroys the Horcrux in Slytherin's Diadem in Chapter 19 (The Silver Doe) of Deathly Hallows. When the Horcrux starts listing Ron's insecurities to him, the first thing it says is "Least loved, always, by the mother who craved a daughter..." Before it starts talking about being overshadowed by Harry, before it starts talking about being hopeless with Hermione, it says that. And I think that it is very telling that the first thing it can think of that Ron's insecure about is that he's a son and not a daughter. How often would Ron have to think about that for that to happen?

Now, you could make the arguement that this is just because he's the youngest sibling, but I do think it's interesting that Ron seems to think his mom wished he was a girl--not that he was as good as his brothers, but that he was a girl. 

There's also the fact that Ron's clothes are often described as being too big, supposedly because they're his brothers' hand-me-downs. But, think about it: Ron would get his clothes from Fred and George. But, in the books, Ron is taller than Fred and George. A good explanation for this would be if he had a different body type to the twins--an FtM body, perhaps? Now, this is obviously not to say that trans men are always smaller than cis men, but I do think it would make sense in this scenario.

Other than that, there really isn't much canonical evidence for FtM Ron. But outside of canon clues, Trans Ron is just so fun as a concept! Imagine if him introducing himself to Harry was the first time he introduced himself as Ron! Imagine how validating it must have felt when he wasn't let into the girls dorm! With FtM Ron, the possibilities really are endless. 

And, another great thing about FtM Ron is that, by encouraging this headcanon (and other trans Harry Potter headcanons), the Harry Potter fandom is forcefully taking the universe away from J. K. Rowling. I know a lot of us have struggled morally with liking Harry Potter in light of Rowling's comments about the trans community, but one of the best ways to reclaim the fandom (in my opinion, at least) is to encourage trans Harry Potter fan-made media! Let her know that her messed-up beliefs do not affect the incredible diversity of the Harry Potter fanbase. Show her that she does not have power over the Harry Potter universe anymore, and she cannot dictate what we do with Harry Potter characters.
