Zoom Out
Chapter 5
Now, time to zoom out and have a look at the wider Harry Potter community.
For a long time now, there's been a real-life memorial to Dobby the house-elf on the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. The memorial, which is full of socks and letters for Dobby that Potterheads have left over the years, is located there as that's where Dobby's death scene was filmed in the movies. However, its location may change soon. Yes, although this is clearly a meaningful place for the memorial, the organization that manages the site fears that the memorial may be negatively affecting the experiences of those who simply want to enjoy the beach. As such, they've released a survey to relocate the memorial, leaving many fans furious. You can learn more about this debate here.
In other news, last Monday was a very important day in Potter history! If you haven't finished reading or watching the final Harry Potter book/movie, be warned: this paragraph contains massive spoilers for it! Monday was May 2nd, which signifies many things in the Wizarding World. First of all, it was the 24th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, when Harry finally killed Voldemort! However, May 2nd is also a day in memoriam of many, many fallen Harry Potter characters. Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Collin Creevey, Lavender Brown, Severus Snape, and an unnamed Fallen Fifty students died fighting for justice over Voldemort on May 2nd, 1998. Even Harry Potter himself sort of died that day. But, crazily enough, that's not the only thing that happened on May 2nd in the Wizarding World! Exactly two years after the Battle of Hogwarts, on May 2nd, 2000, Bill and Fleur Weasley had their first child! Victoire Weasley was born on the second anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, and was named for the French word for victory because her birthday marks the victory over Voldemort.
Well, that concludes this week's edition of Zoom Out! If you're aware of any Harry Potter-related news or events that are coming up soon, owl me or put it in the A Gay's Gaze club, AGGatH Readers, and I'll include it in future issues!
