Could it Be?

Chapter 6

Hi everybody and welcome to the first ever Could it Be? article. Today, I'll be taking a look at one of my personal favorite LGBTQ+ Harry Potter headcanons: aroace Charlie Weasley.

So, if you haven't read the books for a while, here's a refresher on Charlie Weasley: he's the second oldest Weasley sibling, he works with dragons in Romania, and in Sorcerer's Stone, he and his friends helped smuggle Norbert(a) out of Hogwarts.

And, for those of you who aren't familiar with the term, aroace means someone who is aromantic and asexual, which basically means that they never experience romantic or sexual attraction (if any aroace people have a better definition, feel free to owl me and I can update this as I myself am not asexual or aromantic). It is important to note that asexual and aromantic people can feel other types of attraction, such as aesthetic, sensual, platonic, and alterous. For more information about different types of attraction, see here: https://www.healthline.com/health/types-of-attraction

So, right off the bat, it seems like a plausible headcanon. In the books, we never see Charlie show interest in anyone, and he's the only Weasley kid (other than Fred) to never marry or have kids. Now, obviously, just because he doesn't start a family doesn't necessarily mean he's aroace. But it's kind of hard to deny that this headcanon has some weight to it once you take into account something that J.K. Rowling said about Charlie. In the documentary J. K. Rowling: A Year in the Life, she says, "He's more into dragons than women." This is pretty overwhelming evidence already, but keep in mind that J. K. Rowling said that in response to a question about Charlie's sexuality! Now, do I think that J. K. Rowling intended to say that Charlie was aroace? No. But, as she so often does, Rowling has made an incredibly queer character... entirely on accident.

Now, do keep in mind that Charlie could be anywhere on the ace and aro spectrums, not necessarily aroace. He might be demisexual/romantic, graysexual/romantic, or a plethora of other identities that fall under the ace umbrella. And, as I said earlier, there's always a chance that he's allosexual and alloromantic (the opposite of asexual and aromantic) and just doesn't wish to start a family. But, given the abundant amount of evidence that we have for Charlie never having felt romantic or sexual attraction, I think it's safe to say that this headcanon is practically canon.

If you would like to learn more about the ace and aro spectrums, here's a quick guide to ace identities and terminology: https://www.oulgbtq.org/acearo-spectrum-definitions.html

And that concludes the first ever Could it Be? segment!

Again, if anyone on the ace or aro spectrums would like to correct me on anything I said here, feel free to owl me and I will be more than open to learning and correcting myself!
