Different Form Of Pain
Chapter 7
Remus pulled away and an out, leaving me there, completely and utterly
confused. I stared at the empty archway where Remus had run out of just
seconds ago.
" Ms. Serana?" A voice broke into my strange world. I
turned towards the sound. I smiled up at Madam Pomfrey, a strange
feeling rising in my chest.
"Yes Madam Pomfrey?" I asked.
"I
need to know what feelings you were feeling during the attack," she
didn't look at me, but continued with her concoction that I had to
drink.
"Fear, Pain, Sadness. Yet, I also felt hope," I scowled slightly.
"I'll
have to tell you friends to be careful around you these next few
months. Those four emotions will be dangerously strong. I also have
grave news," she looked at me, but her eyes were full or apologies.
"What is it Madam Pomfrey?" I tilted my head.
"You're
a werewolf now. Every full moon I need you to take wolfsbane. Mr. Lupin
will be able to tutur you through it," she then smiled, "on a happy
note, I can realise you tomorrow. I was unable to close the wounds, but I
could wrap them up. You leg is mended, so you'll have no trouble
walking. You'll need to learn to write with you left hand because you
right will be in a cast."
I tried to take everything she said in.
I got stuck on the fact that I was a werewolf. 'I guess it's ok, I love
werewolfs,' I told myself. I made myself believe it was ok. I fell
asleep after taking the potion.
I awoke the next morning feeling
refreshed. I yawned and stretched. I got out of my bed. That day
was......Sunday! Still no school. I walked to the Gryffindor Commen
Room. To my dismay, the two people I really didn't want to talk to were
sitting on th couches. I tried to creep upstairs, but Sirius saw me.
"Serana! Can I speak with you?" He asked. I closed my eyes tightly and turned around.
"I...um...uh...I...uh...have...work...um...catch...up," I stammered.
"She's going to Hogsmead with Jinxy and me," Lils said, walking down the stairs. I nodded furiously.
"Oh. Ok," Sirius sighed and sat back down next to Remus. My heart snapped.
"I'll... talk to you when we get back," I bit my lip. A saw a small smirk creep up his face.
"Go change," Lils whispered.
"Thanks," I smiled at her. She nodded.

I rushed back downstairs to see Jinxy and Lils both ready.
"Ready?" Lils smiled at me. I nodded. As we passed the couches, both Remus and Sirius smirked at me. I flushed deeply.
"Ok," Lils turned around and stopped my with her hands, "what was that all about?"
"What was what about?" I asked, not looking her in her eyes. Her piercing green eyes.
"You know, Rani. Don't play dumb," she crosses her arms.
"I
finished Les Misérables. You can read it now," I pulled the book from
my bag and handed it to her, hoping she would get off the subject.
"Rani. What happened?" She pressed. Jinxy was just looking around awkwardly. She is just like me. I sighed.
"Fine. When Sirius was a dog, before I knew it was Sirius, I admitted I had a crush on him-"
"You have a crush on Sirius?!" Lils and Jinxy squealed. I nodded.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Lils sighed with disappointment.
"I
thought that since you guys hated them, you guys would hate me," I
admitted. "Sev knows because he kept insisting that I liked Remus.
Anyway, now Sirius knows I like him. Just last night, I was telling
Remus how it wasn't his fault I got hurt, then he kissed me. So
everything is now awkward. Please don't tell Frank!" I pleaded.
"Let's
just pretend nothing ever happened. You'll talk to Sirius, the
everything will go back to normal!" Lils smiled proudly. I nodded. We
walked off to Hogsmed. We spent the entire day talking, laughing, and
buying things. Jinxy and I only bought books and candy, whilst Lils
bought clothes as well.
"Oh, and I would like Les Misérables," Lils announced one our way to the Shrieking Shack. I handed it to her.
"Maybe
this Christmas I could get my mother to take us to see it in the
theaters. It's supposed to come out for the first time next month," I
said. Jinxy smiled brightly and nodded.
"Is it sad? It sounds sad," Lils asked, turning the book in her hands.
"Yeah. Extremely sad," Jinxy nodded. I burst into tears.
"Rani! What's wrong?" Lils dropped the book, which made me scream.
"I'm
sorry. Madam Pomfrey said that the next few months, I'll be really
emotional in Pain, sadness, fear, and hope. Don't worry," I waved them
off. Lils picked the book up and brushed off the dirt. We had arrived at
the Shrieking Shack just as I whipped away the last of my tears.
"I wanna go closer," I complained. Jinxy nodded.
"Yeah.
But it's against the rules," Lils sighed with disappointment. Lils and I
have never been known to disobey the rules. Being that the Sorting Hat
said Jinxy was like me, she must have felt the same way.
"Look boys! Just who we wanted to see!" A voice drawled from behind us.
"Back off Malfoy," Lils growled.
"What are you gonna do about it Mudblood?" He snarled. Lils backed down.
"Don't speak of her like that!" I yelled.
"Oh, is Little Miss Perfect getting feisty?" Luscious laughed.
"I've
met worse than you. Far worse than you could ever imagine," I hissed,
glaring at him. He punched me across the jaw. I whimpered and fell over.
Images of a few nights ago came flooding back. Being flung into a tree,
have my body torn to shreds, and my arm almost ripped off. I started to
cry. Lils ran to my side.
"Yes. You've defiantly met worse than me," he scoffed.
"Leave...leave her alone Malfoy," Jinxy stuttered.
"What
are you going to do to me Jinx?" He got right up in her face. Her face
went pale. I stood up and shoved Luscious. I had the same courage I had
when talking to James about Quidditch. I wondered if I made the team.
Hopefully. Luscious gasped. He growled at me then charged me. He sent me
tumbling to the ground.
"GET THE BLOODY HELL OFF OF HER!!" A
voice boomed. I looked up. To my surprise, Remus, James, Peter, and
Sirius were running down the hill to my aid. James, Remus, and Peter got
caught up with Avery, LeStrange, and Dolohov. Sirius ran at Luscious,
who was in shock. Sirius jumped and tackled Luscious. I scrambled up and
into the safety of Lils and Jinxy.
"Are you ok?" Lils whispered.
I nodded, unable to speak. I watched in horror as the boys bunch, kick,
hex, and jinx each other. It reminded me off that night with Remus as a
werewolf. It over powered my brain.
"Enough!" Someone yelled.
All eyes turned to me. Why? Oh right, because I said it. Shocked, I
sprinted back to Hogsmed. Gasping for breath, I sat down on a bench in
front of Honey Dukes. I put my head in my hands.
"Rani! You ok?" Someone asked. Two people sat next to me and put their hands on my shoulders.
"What's
happening to me Lils? Since the beginning of this year, I've been more
angry. I've yelled and snapped at people. That isn't me," I cried. Lils
hugged me.
"You are going to change in your life time, and that's
ok. As long as you don't forget who your friends are and who your
enemies are, then you're fine," Jinxy said reassuringly. I smiled at
them.
"Thanks guys," I stood up, Jinxy and Lils followed. We walked around a bit more before heading back to the castle.
I
sat alone in the Commen Room. Lils and Jinxy had gone to eat Dinner,
but I stayed behind. I stared at the fire and thought of all of the
events from the past few weeks. It's almost the middle of October. It'd
been Three weeks since I became a werewolf. I hadn't talked to any of
the Maurarders. I'd been avoiding them really. I spent most of the time
in my room, reading, talking to Pluto, writing.
I pretended that
staring at the fire would burn up all my worries to ashes. As that
thought wove through my mind, Sirius walked in, laughing. I turned. He
had his arm around one of the other Gryffindor Girl's waist. My heart
broke in two then fell into a bottomless pit. I turned back the to the
fire, resisting tears. I imagined Sirius's picture in the fire, turning
black (no pun intended) then crumbling into dust. It didn't help. It
made the pain worse. The tears silently spilt from my eyes. Sirius Sat
in the chair next to me, the girl on his lap. Without thinking, I
whisked myself away and ran into my dorm, hoping no one was in there. I
was wrong. Sitting on her bed reading was Alice. I couldn't stop the
tears, and I couldn't go back downstairs. So my only option was sneak
over to my bed without Alice seeing me.
"I can see you Serana,
you know that, right?" Alice sighed, not looking up from her book. I
tried to speak, but no words came out, just tears. Why couldn't I stop
crying?
"Serana, are you alright?" She asked, finally looking up.
Her eyes were glued to my tears. After a while, I came up with the only
rational response. I shook my head. She shut her book and walked over
to me.
"What happened?" She whispered.
"He...I thought...but...I love him...but...he...he knows...I can't...it hurts..." I stuttered.
"Speak words Serana," her voice was gentle, like a sister's.
"I'm
in love with Sirius Black. But he is so-" then it hit me. Her eyes said
'I told you so'. It was Alice who warned me last year about Sirius. It
was her who tried to protect me. Without warning, I hugged her.
"I
told you Serana. He's a devil in disguise. He's snake with blue eyes,
who only comes out at night," she whispered and hugged me back. I cried
on her shoulder. She sat down on the bed, leading me with her.
"He's
a player, Serana. He leads girls on just to break their hearts," she
said, as if she knew what it felt like as well. Of course she didn't
know what it's like. She's not a werewolf, her emotions aren't as
strong, especially these. After a nothing long time, all filled with me
crying and Alice trying to sooth me, Jinxy and Lils walked in, laughing.
I didn't understand how they could. I looked up at them, tear stains on
my checks, and sniffled.
"Oh, Rani," Lils whispered, rushing over.
"Who
did this to you?" Jinxy growled slightly. I looked up at the door,
which remained open. Sounds that were too familiar to me filled my ears.
My heart snapped even more. I jumped up and ran into the bathroom. Was
Sirius trying kill me? He knew all to well I liked him. Why would he do
this to me?
"He's a player, Serana. He leads girls on, just to break their hearts"
"He's a devil in disguise. He's a snake with blue eyes, and he only comes out at night."
"He gives you feelings you don't want to fight. You better run for your life."
"Run,
run away. Don't let him mess with your mind. He'll tell you anything
you want to hear. He'll break your heart it's just a matter of time.
Just remember,"
With tears still running down my face, rage
coursed through my body. My hand clutched the side of the sink, to keep
me from shaking. It didn't work. I screamed in fury. I swept everything
off the counter. I pulled out my wand.
"BOMBARDA! BOMBARDA!
BOMBARDA!" I screamed repetitively, blowing up everything in the
bathroom. The only thing that remained was the mirror. I looked into it.
It was broken. The person inside was horrid. Her face was white, her
eyes red and puffy. Her lips were dry. Her hair was stringy and coated
in broken bits of bathroom parts. Her glasses were shattered, along with
her heart. Is this what I'd become? I monster who hides behind her
books?
"Rani? Are you alright?" A quiet voice asked from outside
the locked door. I didn't answer. I was already on the floor, curled
into a small, fragile ball, once again crying my heart out. A voice
piped up.
"Is everything ok up here? I heard screaming and things breaking. Sirius said to check if everything-"
"You tell Sirius next time he wants to see something, to do it himself!" A very angry Lily screamed at the voice.
"Serana
River Longbottom. You get your bum out here this instant or I'll knock
this door down!" Lils shouted. I ignored her again. I stood up and
looked at the broken mirror again. It made me angry, just looking at it.
I curled up my fist and slammed it into the reflection of the monster
with in me. I did it again, and again, and again.
"Alohamora," someone said. The door unlocked and opened.
"Serana?" Jinxy asked, as if she unsure if it still me. I shrugged and shook my head.
"I
don't know. I told you Lils, I'm changing," I admitted. Alice was still
trying to comprehend the mess, both the and me. I burst into another
round of endless tears.
"And I told you as long as you remember who your friends are, and who your enemies are, you'll be just fine," Lils sighed.
Lils and Jinxy ran in and hugged me. They pulled me out.
"Repero," Alice fixed whatever she could of the bathroom.
"Rani,
look at your hands. Look what your doing to yourself," Lils dabbed my
hands with a towel Molly and Alice scavenged from the bathroom.
"I know. I don't...I don't know what happened," I shook my head, confused.
"Love. You love him and can't stand seeing him with someone else," Jinxy sighed.
"I'm going to talk to Sirius. Jinxy, stay with Rani. Make sure she doesn't hurt herself anymore," Lils ordered.
"Don't hurt him," I said, grabbing her wrist. She looked at me with sympathy in her eyes.
"I won't," she replied before walking back out the ajar door. I layed my head on Jinxy's lap.
"Frank?" Lils tapped on the door to my brother's dorm. It was closest to us on the boys side.
"Lily?" Frank sounded confused. Lils told Frank the whole story. Everything.
"Riv.
Oh Riv," Frank whispered," Black!" I gasped. Lils said she wouldn't
hurt Sirius, but Frank will. I tried to get up, but Jinxy held me down.
She knew. She knew Lils was getting Frank. I squirmed slightly.
"Yes Longbottom?" Sirius's cocky voice asked. I could see his smirk from here, even I couldn't see him.
"You hurt my sister," Frank snarled.
"What, Serana? Why would I hurt Serana?" Sirius asked.
"Why don't you ask you little girlfriend over there?!" Frank boomed.
"Oh. I saw her running out of the Commen Room the her dorm a few minutes ago. She looked fine-"
"But she's not," Lils intervened.
"How was I supposed to know it'd hurt her. I'm not her pet anymore!" Sirius yelled.
"She told you she loved you," Lils sighed.
"No, she told me she had a crush on me, that different!" Sirius protested.
"No, it isn't! She just destroyed the entire bathroom! She punched a mirror. She's a wreck!" Lils shouted.
"What's going on here?" Remus's voice piped in.
"Go upstairs and see for yourself," Frank growled. Remus came running up. Lils must have stepped on the stairs.
"Ana? What happened?" He asked, kneeling beside me. I once again had to here to story of how I became a beast.
"Ana,"
Remus stroked my hair. There was a loud crack. I knew what happened. I
struggled out of Jinxy's grip and past Remus. Alice and Molly blocked
the door. I could see what happened. Frank punched Sirius. He Staggered
backwards.
"Sirius," I muttered, trying to push past Alice. Then
again, Frank punched Sirius. I said his name a little louder. Sirius
recovered quicker and punched Frank back.
"Sirius!" I shouted.
The ignored me. The boys continued fighting. I finally pushed past Alice
and Frank and ran down the stairs. Lils grabbed hold of my arms. Both
boys pulled out their wands.
"Stupify!"
"Protego!" A red light came from Frank's wand, but a blue shield came from Sirius's Frank was knocked backwards.
"Frank!"
I yelled. "Stop it! Stop it please!" They kept on going. Spells back
and forth. Tears continued to roll down checks, but not from sadness or
anger, but from fear.
"Lily let me go! Let go!" I struggled to
get out of her grip,"Remus! Help me!" I looked back up at my room. Could
barely see inside. Remus was busy comforting a now sobbing Jinxy. I
sighed with frustration.
"Aguamenti!" Frank yelled, aiming at
Sirius's face. The water hit Sirius straight in the mouth. He tried to
cough, but the water kept coming.
"Frank! Stop it! You're killing him!" I screamed.
"He
hurt you!" Roared Frank. I finally broke free from Lils. I pushed past
Frank and pushed Sirius out of the range of the water spell. It
extinguished the fire with a hiss. I looked down at Sirius. His eyes
were closed.
"Come on Sirius. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up ,"I ordered. I slapped his face a few times. He coughed.
"I
don't take orders from women," he coughed, spitting up water. I beamed
and hugged him. He sat up, Shocked, but still hugged me back. Frank
whipped his bloody and walked back upstairs. Lils sighed and did the
same.
"Leave Remus. I've got this," Lils said. Remus walked
downstairs, paused, then walked back up to the boy's dormitories. Sirius
and I just stayed there, engulfed in our hug.
