Chapter 3
"You were gone for three days!"
"Mom, I'm sorry-"
"Sorry doesn't cover it, Maya. You're mother and I were worried sick!"
"I'm not a child anymore! You don't always have to keep tabs on me!"
"Then why do you live with us? Maya, when the baby is born, your mom and I won't have time to be looking for you!"
"Fine! I'll move out! Gotta make some room for the stupid baby, right?"
I love babies. They're so cute and tiny. Their cheeks are so chubby, and their toes are so small. I love babies, but I don't want a sister or brother. My family is perfectly fine as it is, and we don't need another mouth to feed. I would call Riley, but apparently, we aren't speaking.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Farkle, is this you?"
"This is he. He is I."
"Awesome! It's Maya, and I was wondering if I could spend a few nights with you? While I search for my own apartment?"
"Sorry Maya, Smackle's family is here, and we don't have any room."
"Oh, okay. Thanks though."
"No problem, and sorry. You and Riles should come to visit sometime."
"Yeah, for sure. Bye, see you." I put down the phone, then pick it up and dial a number.
"Isaiah Babineaux speaking."
"Zay? It's Maya."
"Hey Maya, wassup?"
"Nothing much, I need a place to stay for a little while, until I find an apartment."
"Oh, sorry my grandmother is here, and if you walk in, you might have to marry me."
"Yikes, ok."
"Sorry, bye."
"Bye." I put the phone down and sigh, then pick it up, clicking on my latest contact.
"Lucas? I need a place to stay. Just for a week or so?"
"Howdy, ma'am. If you're asking to stay at my place, sure. A month at longest though, Riley is moving in with me."
"Super! Thanks, see you later."
"Goodbye."
"Bye." I put the phone down, this time with a smile on my face. I pull out a suitcase and lay it open on my bed. I put my headphones in, and walk over to my closet, pulling out shirts, and pants from the drawers.
"Er, Maya?" I take out my headphones and see dad standing at my door.
"What?"
"Why is Lucas here to pick you up?" He asks, walking in, and sitting on the end of the bed.
"Because I'm staying with him for a while. The baby will be born soon, so I have to hurry." I say, closing the suitcase, and grabbing my backpack. I kiss him on the cheek, then go to the living room and give mom a kiss on the forehead as she sleeps. I go over to the door, which Lucas opens for me. I turn back, and smile at dad, then walk out the door, closing it behind me.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Yes. But we have to stop at Riley's before we go. I just need to tell her something." I say, and he nods, taking my suitcase.
We walk out of the building, and across the stress to Riley's house. I go up into the building and ring her doorbell.
"Maya. Hey." She says and I hug her. She makes a surprised noise but then hugs back. "I'm sorry I was so awful. I was upset about daddy, and now that Joshy has been diagnosed, I'm scared. " She says, and I hug her again. I bid her farewell, and walk out of the building to Lucas again.
"All is well," I say, and he grins, starting to walk again. We walk to Lucas' house, and he leads me to a small spare room, with a bed, closet, and small desk.
"Thank you, Huckleberry. I appreciate it." I say, and he nods, sliding the suitcase into the room and closing the door. I plop the suitcase on the bed, and open it, slowly unpacking my clothes. After putting everything away, I sit on the bed and take three small photo frames out of my backpack. The first one is me, mom, and dad, the second one is Zay, Riley, Lucas, Farkle, Smackle and I, and the third one is a picture of Josh and me on our first night together. I set them on the nightstand, and look at them.
"Maya?" Lucas taps the door, then walks in. He looks around, his eyes catching the photos, and he smiles. "You've made yourself at home. Do you need anything?" He asks and I shake my head, "Ok, dinner will be ready soon." I nod again and thank him. He leaves, closing the door behind him.
