Lesson Eight: Feathered Friends Study Guide
Chapter 9
Back in the day, creatures that could fly were the norm for transport. The positive side is that magical creatures do not run out of magical energy & crash, & are more comfortable while riding. The downside is that these creatures may want to land across a patch of flowers & plants, as well as reusing to fly when its bad weather. Winged horses consist of Abraxans, Granians, & Thestrals. Hippogriffs are not a part of winged horses but they are still a means of travel. They can sense your true purpose & can be offended easily. Basically, treat them with kindness & they will return the favor.
The Mane Event
Walk towards the horse at a slow pace to show kindness & walk towards the head. In arms length, pet their head to show that you mean no harm. Once the creature stops being tense, keep petting slowly until they are still. Take your leg & move it over their back & keep your legs behind its wings to let the horse fly with a full range of motion. Avoid grabbing their neck or mane, as it can startle the creature & do not try again immediately after. To go in a direction, lean to your desired direction. To hold onto the horse, wrap your arms around their neck & your legs around their body. Avoid pulling or squeezing their mane, neck, or body while in flight, as the horse can buck you off mid-air.
Fun Facts
⊱ Today, winged horses are used as entertainment or for racing.
⊱ Thestrals are the best because they are smart & have a mysterious way of sensing directions. State a landmark or a city & Thestrals will know exactly where to go.
⊱ At Hogwarts, Thestrals are used to pull carriages from Hogsmeade Station to the castle.
⊱ Saddles are rarely used on winged horses, but when they are used, carefully place it around their middle.
