Lesson Seven: Magic Carpet Ride Study Guide

Chapter 8

History of Magic Carpets

In the Common Era, stories of magical carpets were common. By five hundred CE, carpets were unstable & unique. In the Middle East & Asia, the Ascension Charm is commonly used. In 1995, flying carpets got banned in the United Kingdom. In 1954, there were many events with flying carpets among children. These children would fly around London at night & fly around homes with Muggles being able to catch a glimpse. In Bremilham, Opal Malone & Ambrose Brabble bewitched a big dining room carpet.

Finally Taking Flight

Lean forward to increase speed & lean backward to decrease speed. Lean left to turn left & lean right to turn right. Pull up the front corners to increase height & push down on the front corners to decrease height. Your willpower & thought to fly in a direction is applied. All passengers must lean in a direction together to avoid the carpet being wobbly. Do not stand when flying, as it can put you & others around you in harm's way. To fly, visualize the carpet flying & say Samunnam.

Fun Facts
The United Kingdom controls how flying carpets are used, while Asia's transport is mostly carpets.
With a flying carpet, Malone & Brabble carried a hippogriff, a capuchin monkey, & a Crup all over the countryside. Due to losing control of the carpet, they crashed into a barn.
The Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects determined carpets as a Muggle artifact that cannot be charmed in any way, thus making flying carpets illegal to use.
Malone & Brabble never confessed what they were doing, & so they served time in Azkaban.
