'Kewok'also known as the wendigo is a mythological creature/evil spirit that
originates from the folklore of First Nations based in around the East Coast
forests of Canada. The wendigo is often seen to be a malicious spirit,
depicted as a creature with almost human characteristics. The wendigo is known
to invoke feelings of extreme greed/hunger, the want to cannibalize others, as
well as the urge to commit crimes like murder in those that are inferior and
under it's influence.
At odds with its portrayals in the twentieth-century and twenty-first-century
settler culture,in some indigenous representations the wendigo is described
as a giant humaniod with a 'heart of ice'; a foul stench or sudden, unseasonable
chill might precede its approach. Possibly due to longtime identification by
Europeans with their own superstitions about werewolves, for example mentioned in
The Jesuit Relations wendigos are represented as human/beast hybrids with antlers/
horns with the 'wendigo' name, but such animal features do not appear in the
indigenous stories.
