Okay, so you're here because you are looking for tips on how to remain a civil person while online.
With these days of the Internet and social media, you probably spend an hour or more looking through Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, or maybe even Hih. And you probably comment frequently on posts. However, social media often causes people to stop being civil to one another, since you can't actually see the other person. So, here are some tips on how to remain a civil and polite person while online.
1. Be kind, always. If you come across a post that you don't agree with, and start to comment angrily, pause. Remember that whoever posted this is a real person, and could you really say all of the not-nice words to them if you were standing face to face? And besides, kindness should be universal; EVERYONE derserves kindness, even the person who was extremely rude to you in chat.
2. Read through anything you wrote before you post or comment. Double-check what you have typed or written for a post or comment before you enter it. Make sure that it would not be offensive, insensitive, or rude to anyone.
3. Stay off social media. Okay, so hear me out. Social media is not always toxic, and when used correctly is a wonderful place to communicate and share with other human beings. However, it can be toxic or addicting, and spending excess time on social media can cause you to lose civility. So, try to stay off it as much as you can. Try limiting yourself to an hour, and then a half hour, of social media a day. Go outside, and enjoy the real world.
4. Be respectful. While on social media, you will, without a doubt, encounter someone with different views than you. That is okay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You are not necessarily the one with the "real" viewpoint. Each view has its own pluses and minuses. So don't get into nasty arguments; be respectful, and try to understand WHY that person thinks what they do.
5. "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -Dumbledore
