Salty Dreams

Chapter 2

That night I had the most bizarre dream. I was walking on the beach, but it was a bit overcast. I saw Evelyn and Lill in the water, I ran into the water to join them. Nobody else was around. Suddenly I felt a surge of power take control of me. I raised my arm into the air in sync with Evelyn and Lill’s arms. There was a flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder, the rain started to fall all around us. The waves grew larger, but none of them hit us. Just then I was awoken by the annoying beeping of my alarm clock, and the smell of fresh pancakes. After breakfast, I went to before care, where I sat down next to Evelyn, Lill, and Scarlette. “Did you have the dream too,” Evelyn asked me as soon as I sat down?

“Ya, how did you know,” I was shocked that Evelyn had the same dream.

“Well, I assumed since it had to do with mermaids we all must have had the same dream,” Evelyn stated matter of factly. I glanced at Lill and we both shrugged.

“Do you guys know how hard it has been, NOT, to write a story about this,” Scarlette raged?

“It’s not much of a story,” Lill pointed out. We all nodded in agreement. Dylan walked up to the table we were sitting at, scaring all of us. Evelyn, Lill, and Scarlette looked confused and scared. “What,” Dylan looked around at them, “bad timing”?

“What is he doing here,” Scarlette whispered in my ear.

“Oh, well, you see,” I looked up at the group who were now staring at me with questioning looks.

“Oh no! Don’t tell me you guys are dating,” Evelyn sighed

“Eww, no of course not,” I replied while trying to avoid looking at Dylan, for minimum humiliation. Evelyn let out a sigh of relief. “Yesterday in the pool Dylan kinda saw me turn un-invisible while I was sitting on the bottom,” I blurted then squinted, bracing for impact. To my surprise, nothing happened. I opened my eyes fully to look at the group, who were staring at Dylan now.

“Chill, I promise not to tell anyone. I am not like Wyatt,” Dylan tried to comfort them.

“I don’t trust him,” Scarlette said hesitantly while giving Dylan one of her famous Medusa Stares.

“Well I do, so don’t try anything,” I glanced over at Scarlette, “Mostly you” We all laughed at this. Later when the older group had classroom time, I sat in a corner reading a book. I looked up as Dylan approached me. He looked nervous, glancing around every few seconds. “It’s ok, they’re getting drawing stuff so make it quick” I reassured him.

“If I don’t Wyatt will start looking for me,” Dylan looked scared at this thought, “Anyway I wanted to say thanks for saving me from your friends earlier,” his voice now at a whisper.

“No problem,” I smiled as I glanced over at Lill, Evelyn, and Scarlette to make sure they were still busy. “They can be a bit crabby sometimes,” I added. We laughed for a few moments. Then Dylan’s face looked serious again, I glanced at Evelyn, Lill, and Scarlette walking back towards me. I gave Dylan a bye look as he headed across the room toward where Wyatt was sitting. The next night I had the same dream as the night before, only it was a bit different. This time there were people on the beach, guys to be specific. Also when we created the storm we were singing a melody that seemed to be luring the guys on the beach to us, and we were pretty far out. Waves crashed over their heads and one by one they disappeared, till they were all gone. I woke up shaking, I looked over at my clock which read the time to be 8:30 a.m. I immediately face-timed Evelyn, when she picked up I could see Lill close behind her. “I take it you had the dream too,” I guessed. They nodded. Suddenly Lill’s eyes widened.

“Guys, I don’t think we are mermaids,” The thought sank in and I knew what she meant, and I could tell by Evelyn’s face she did too.

“We are sirens,” I broke the silence

The thought of being a siren brought an overwhelming amount of mixed emotions. I tend to sing under my breath to songs I know, but what if I am singing and do something to someone without even realizing it. I can now add being paranoid to my list of things this new information causes me.
The next night I had the same dream again. I was starting to get annoyed with this concept. The dream had no people on the beach, it was the same as the first night. I didn’t want to dream about beaches and storms and sirens every single night. Now I was kinda wishing I wasn’t a siren anymore, then I had an idea. I marked the dates on my calendar hanging on my bedroom wall. I have this weird process of figuring things out where I just stare at something until the answer slaps me in the face, now that I am thinking about it that method doesn’t work most of the time. I still gave it a shot though. Thankfully it worked, I realized that the dreams occurred during the time of the full moon. The dreams with no people on the beach happened the night before the full moon and the night after the full moon, whereas the dream with guys on the beach happened the night of the full moon. I immediately set to work researching, which took up the rest of my Sunday.
When I arrived at camp on Monday I was greeted with the absence of Lil, Eve, and Scarlette. I caught sight of Dylan heading towards me with an unusual facial expression.

“You don’t look too good Dylan,” he jumped at the sound of my voice.

“What? Oh yeah um, I did some research over the weekend, and…..”

“Oh,” I realized now why he was acting so strange, “I take it you found out about the Siren thing”

Dylan’s face was blank, “WHAT? No what Siren thing? Are you a Siren?” I bit my lip and nodded. I accidentally put Dylan into a crazy processing state again, only this time it didn’t last as long.

“What I originally came over here to talk about how you got your powers,” Dylan whispered.

“Then why did you look so nervous,”

“ I didn’t know where Scarlette, Evelyn, and Lil were,” he glanced around in search of them.

“They’re not here. Scarlette is tutoring, and Eve and Lil are on vacation,” the look on Dylan’s face eased.

“Alright! Listen up campers. This week is another research project week,” a groan erupted from the crowd as Mr. Chase continued, “find your partners and see me for your classroom assignment. Each group will be in their own room.” Dylan and I decided to work together. Wyatt was already working with one of his other “friends”, so I don’t think he paid much attention to us. Our assignment was to make a presentation on the history of Camp Mythic Storm AND present it to the whole camp. No pressure huh? Dylan and I were assigned to a room with the two quiet kids, Jake and Laurance, so talking about any research related to me being a mermaid would be quite hard if we didn’t want them to hear it.
