One day at Camp Mythic Storm the older group was outside enjoying their recess time when a roll of thunder rumbled across the sky. While quickly lining up to get back inside, I felt a small shock as I saw lightning strike a few miles away. After everyone was safely back inside the building we headed to the classroom, where I met up with Evelyn and Lill. “Did you guys feel a shock when that lightning struck while we were lining up,” I questioned?

   “Yeah we did,” Lill answered in a stunned tone. Evelyn looked as confused as I felt. “Should we tell anyone,” she whispered?

   “No, what if it gave us powers,” I warned even though I knew that was a silly outcome.

  “Yeah right, like that would ever happen,” Evelyn laughed. She went back to drawing, while she wasn’t looking I quickly flicked off the froggy hat that she had been wearing. 

   “Hey” she started “Kaitlynn? What the heck, where did you go?”

   “What do you mean I am right here?” I respond, my brain starting to spin again.

  “I think your theory was right” Lill chuckled

   “What do you mean by theory? Like my lightning powers theory, theory”

   “Pretty much since you know” Lill leaned in closer to whisper “you just turned invisible and then back again” My brain was as overwhelmed as the sky was blue. I stared at my reflection in the plexiglass divider. I closed my eyes and thought hard about wanting to be invisible. I opened my eyes to find myself staring at a reflection of the room behind me instead of me. I watched my reflection reappear as I heard Evelyn call my name. She had snapped me out of being invisible because the counselors were walking around the room counting and recounting everyone because ya know, why not. The counselors walked past us and following behind them was the one, the only, the bully, Wyatt. I quickly used my new ability to hide in plain sight. I looked over at Lill and Evelyn to find Megan in Lill’s place. Once Wyatt passed by Megan morphed into Lill, it was gross but cool. “Lill you just turned into Megan,” Evelyn said exactly what I was thinking.

   “No way? I just thought that I wanted to look like someone else” Lill blurted. She looked ecstatic to have an ability as well.

   “Cool you guys have powers, but what about me! I was shocked too?” Evelyn interrupted

  “I don’t know, maybe you’ll find yours tomorrow” I suggested with a shrug.

  “I hope so, if you guys get powers and I don’t I am going to be so mad” Evelyn looked serious. I glanced at Lill and I can tell by her face we were thinking the same thing: I hope Evelyn discovers her powers tomorrow. The next day camp went on as normal except for here and there we had to snap each other out of our powers. Also today our friend Scarlette was at camp too. Evelyn, Lill, and I decided not to tell her about our powers, because she would probably write a story about it. Wyatt was always after Scarlettes stories for some reason, so if he found one that she wrote about us and our powers we wouldn’t be secret much longer. Today at recess time we headed over to the swings, and this time no storm clouds were in sight. “Let’s have a competition to see who can jump the farthest off the swings” Evelyn challenged.

 “I’m in” I shouted

   “Same” Lill agreed

  “I don’t know” Scarlette piped up, “I think I’ll sit this one out. Plus I am going to go get my water bottle from the other playground area” we watched as Scarlette walked towards the place where water bottles were put during recess. We got up to the height we wanted to jump from on our swings, Evelyn the highest of course. I jumped and landed a good five feet away, next Lill jumped landing about 3 feet in front of me. “Come on” I complained as I walked back to my swing to get out of the way. Evelyn jumped and she was about to land behind Lille when she floated away in front of her. “I won, and WHAT just happened,” she said as she turned around.

  “I think you found your power” I cheered in a hushed voice.

 “Yea, Evelyn you were flying” Lill smiled as she hugged her sister. Just then the whistle blew and we headed over to join the line. We met up with Scarlette and told her who won. After playing a few rounds of gaga, some dodgeball, and eating afternoon snacks it was finally swimming time. Evelyn, Lill, Scarlette, and I jumped into the pool at the same time. The pool felt oddly more refreshing than usual, I took a deep breath in. Wait, a deep breath, I am breathing underwater. Is this another power, I swim back up to the surface to face a shocked Scarlette. “What,” Lill, Evelyn, and I all asked together. Scarlette led us to a corner in the deep end.

 “You guys have tails” she gasped. I look down to see a mermaid tail in place of my legs. I look at Lill and Evelyn, they have tails too, I touch my tail hoping that it would go away. My tail disappeared and my legs took their place once again. I went underwater to do the same to Evelyn and Lill’s tails. I could still breathe underwater which is awesome. We took some time to explain to Scarlette what was happening, we figured that our tails were caused by the lightning shock just like our powers. I took advantage of my water breathing to just chill on the bottom, while Evelyn and Lill were racing across the pool not taking any time to pop their head up and take a breath. I was watching Evelyn and Lill when I noticed that Wyatt and Dylan swam above where I was. I had decided to chill in a  corner where no one would hopefully see me. I completely forgot that this is where Wyatt and Dylan like to see how long they can stand on the bottom. I saw them start heading to the bottom, I quickly turned invisible but I think Dylan might have seen me. The boys were back up with their heads above the water. I swam to the surface still invisible to listen in on their conversation. I heard Dylan ask Wyatt if he saw a girl at the bottom of the pool. “Dylan are you going crazy what do you mean no one is on the bottom of the pool” Wyatt snapped at him

   “Ya, you're right it was probably my eyes tricking me” Dylan agreed yet his face seemed not fully convinced. I went back down to the bottom, but I guess I made a splash as I did because when I turned un-invisible at the bottom and looked up I saw Dylan looking down at me. I gave Dylan a quick shhh look holding my finger to my lips. I turned and swam away to the other corner of the deep end. After swimming, it was pick-up time, but I was at aftercare. Evelyn, Lill, and Scarlette don’t go to aftercare so I was on my own since Dylan does go to aftercare. When I was sitting by the edge of the gaga pit at aftercare waiting for the next round to start Dylan came around the corner and sat next to me. “Boo,” He said

   “Ahhh” I replied sarcastically

   “So what is this thing with you in the pool” he whispered

  “Well first you can’t tell anyone, and I mean anyone,” I said sternly

   “I promise” he looked up at me “You can trust me. I know I hang out with Wyatt and stuff, but I am not like him. You can trust me”

   “I do trust you or I would have mind-wiped you by now” I tried so hard not to laugh as Dylan now looked terrified. “I am kidding, I can’t mindwipe people. I think, but I do trust you” Dylan’s face looked relieved

  “So how did you turn invisible in the pool” Dylan whispered “Are you like a mermaid or something” he joked. I looked up at him with a half-smile on my face. “Wait! You are a mermaid” I nodded “I’m sorry if I offended you. I don’t know any mermaids” I laughed at this.

“Well, you do now. Since I told you the truth I mind as well tell you the whole truth” I whispered. Dylan’s face turned pale “Evelyn and Lill are mermaids too. Please don’t tell a soul” Dylan nodded. Then the aftercare counselors called for the next game of gaga to start, and that was that no more mermaid discussions that day.
