Lorenzo – Coward or Hero

Chapter 2

I don’t know if what she did was stupid or courageous, but that’s not what everyone is talking about. “Lorenzo can’t jump, but the girl can.” Is the phrase I hear most often. I don’t mind that she actually jumped, but no one says a word on how I saved her guts. When we have lunch, I go over to the table Sara and her friend are sitting at “Enjoying the fame?” I ask her, sitting down. “More like facing the fact that I’m totally out of my mind.” She says, butting her legs on the bench and I chuckle. “Well, they say you have the courage of a lion and stupidity of a donkey.” I tell her, and she snorts. I grin and her friend forges a gag. “I’m still here you psychos.” She says and Sara laughs. I chuckle and get up. “Dolphin surfing starts in two hours, hope to see you there.” I say, looking at Sara and she nods, smiling. I smile and walk away, and I hear Sara’s friend giggling. Mario pulls me aside, and warns me not to ‘do’ anything with any camper, and I scoff. “Who would I ‘do’ anything with?” I ask and he looks over at Sara, “You seem to have taken an interest in Sara Rossi. You are to treat them all the same if you still want it.” I nod firmly, then turn away. I stop, and turn around, “What did those guys want. Last night?” I ask, and he chuckles. “Stunt gone wrong. We ordered a firework bomb and emergency guns but the wrong shipment was delivered, and nobody checked them.” He says plainly, “You do realize kids could have died” I say, grabbing his arm as. He turns away. He chuckles again, “So what? They didn’t, did they? Now stop questioning me, or your perfect life will disappear.” He says, pulling out of my grip and walking away. I stand there, fuming and go back to my tent. After a moment, I run back out and go to the shed to get my board for the dolphin surfing. I run to the beach, board in my hand, a smile on my face. Sara walks up in a blue swimsuit, and I grin. She stands next to me and puts a blue camp hat on. She throws her board in the water and jumps after it. She looks back at me, and grins as I jump in after her. We go up to Mario’s boat. And he looks at me. I edge slightly away from Sara. One other girl joins us, and Mario takes us out. He takes us out farther than usual, and the waves are rougher. Sara looks down at the water and frowns. “How deep is it?” She asks, and I shrug. A girl yelps, and a dolphin jumps in the air, and the girl giggles. Sara laughs and stands up on her board, making her way toward the other girl and the dolphin. I chuckle, and look at Mario who is watching Sara. “How’s her ankle? Will she be able to back without any problems?” he asks and I nod. We both look over at Sara and she smiles at me. Her face freezes, and a terrified expression is replaced. “Lorenzo, get in the boat!” She screams and I look down, and see nothing at first. Then, I see the white blades, and beady eyes. Shark. I lunge at Mario’s boat as the shark’s nose breaks through the water. I hear Sara scream, and the girl yelp for help. “Mario, we have to get them” I yell, and he starts the boats engine. We speed towards them, and I see Sara, she’s holding the girl’s hand, trying to pull her out of the water. The shark’s blade speeds toward them, “Sara, you have to let her go!” I yell. Sara shakes her head, and keeps pulling. Suddenly, she lets go, and reaches down for her ankle. She wobbles and I reach for her, and her face goes white. The water turns a murky red. I grab her under her arms as the little girl is pulled underwater. Mario speeds us away, and Sara whimpers. I set her on the life jackets, and tie a wet suit over her ankle, providing stability. “You won’t be able to see it.” I tell her as she looks down and rubs her ankle. She starts to sniff and I look up at her, her chocolate brown eyes glistening with tears. “She was so young…” She whispers and I nod, pulling her into a hug. Mario looks at me, “Lorenzo. Che cosa ho detto?” He says. “What did he say?” Sara asks, and Mario grumbles something. She smiles and rests her head on my shoulder and closes her eyes. I watch as her belly rises up and down, and how her thin pink lips part as she breathes. I make a silent promise to myself: Never let anyone hurt the girl in front of me. Her heart is too soft to handle any pain. To innocent to experience death. Murder. I look up at Mario and know.
