Introduction

Charms is an introduction to spellcasting in general. The basics of spellcasting, wandlore, and various componets to cast a spell will all be covered in First Year.

Brief History and Essential Laws

Magic was practiced more openly then it was now, due to the fact that magic was highly appreciated in anceint Greece and Eygpt. Dedicated wand making started in 382 B.C.E. by the Ollivander family. There was always a fear of a wand exploding or backfiring. 1000 C.E. was when Muggles and wizards started to seperate. Witch burnings started in 1600, which was harmless to the witch do to a Flame-Freezing Charm. This lead to the International Statute of Secrecy of 1689 when witches and wizards started to seek revenge on Muggles who burned them. It took three years for this law to be accecpted iternationally. Magic is now a legend for Muggles, but all fairytales are rooted in truth. Another important law is the Decree for the Resonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery, which took action in 1875. The Ministry of Magic can have a hard time detecting underage magic unless it is in a muggle household.

The Discovery of Wands

Magic was not always controled back in the day. Old wands were made in a terrible fasion. However, it was the only way they could make them with limited knowledge and supplies. Wands today are a lot more advanced. Now we have less fear with our wands, leading to more control and experiments.

The Wand-Lighting and Wand-Extinguishing Charms

The wand-lighting charm was first used in 1772 by Levina Monkstanley. The incanation for this charm is Lumos (LOO-mos). You move your wand in a counter clockwise loop. It requires low willpower and low concentration. The willpower determines the color of the light, as too much willpower will turn your light scarlet and too little will turn it a pearly white. The goal is a pale yellow.

The wand-extinguishing charm is equally important, as it extinguishies the light from Lumos. The incanation is Nox (NOCK-ss). You flick your wand to carry out this spell, and it requires no willpower and no concentration.
