Basic Genetics

Chapter 1

Genetics is the study of heredity, the process in which the parent passes on certain genes onto their children. This means that children inherit their biological parents' genes that express specific traits, such as some physical characteristics, genetic disorders, and natural talents like magic.

The traits you inherit are expressed by genes, which are small sections of DNA that are coded for specific traits. Genes are found in chromosomes. Humans have two sets of 23 chromosomes, one set from each parent.

Glossary of Genetic terms:

Allele: The information that is contained in each gene

Genes: The region on the chromosome that contains information

Dominant : Masks recessive traits, only one allele is required for this trait to physically manifest. Ex. Both BB and Bb will give you brown eyes

Recessive: Is masked by dominant allele. Two alleles are required for this trait to show itself. Ex. bb will give you blue eyes but Bb is brown eyes

Homozygous: When both alleles are the same. Ex. either BB or bb

Heterozygous: When there is two different allele, one dominant and one recessive. Ex. Bb

Genotype: specific genetic information contained in the gene

Phenotype: the physical expression of the information in genes
