Fireworks
Chapter 2
Hannah Baeytorin settled down on the grass. The summer air was warm, and at four years old, Hannah pointed out each firefly as it passed by. "Look, Mama!" She gasped and looked up at her mother with wide eyes. "It's a lightning bug.." she whispered, as one landed on her leg. She scooped it up excitedly and watched it crawl around on her hand.
Kendalin, Hannah's younger, three year old sister, crawled off the bench where she'd been perched, and picked at some grass, depositing it in her mouth. The girls' mother quickly scooped her up and took it out, frowning. "No, don't eat that, love!" A door clattered behind them, and out skipped a six year old girl, Lucy, pulling her father by the hand.
"Thank goodness, Liam, K's been trying to eat grass again! Take her for a second, will you?" The woman forked over her daughter, and took the box of sparklers from her husband.
"Ah, let her eat it, Rachelle, then she'll not do it again when it tastes bad! A little dirt ne'er hurt a lass!" He winked and bounced his daughter on his knee, and she tried to grab his wand out of his pocket. He chuckled. "Would you look at that, my little girl's got an itching for magic already!"
Lucy and Hannah ran over to their mother, both squealing with glee. "Alright, alright, calm down!" She laughed amd handed them each a sparkler, then looked around to see if any of their muggle neighbors happened to be watching. Seeing that the coast was clear, she pulled out her wand, but before she could cast a small fire-making charm, Lucy yelped. "Mother, look!" She gasped. Her sparkler had been set off, and was freely burning. Lucy waved it around a bit, and the sparks changed colors. She giggled. Hannah jumped up and down.
"Mama, I want one too!" Rachelle raised an eyebrow, and snuck a look at her husband.
"Looks like you've got magic of your own!" She lit Hannah's for her, and the two girls went skipping off, whooping with joy and waving their sparklers.
She settled back down with Kendalin Katrina. "I suppose we should think about moving soon, then?" Liam nodded, smiling a bit. "Of course. For a while I was a tad worried that maybe she wouldn't have magic, that maybe none of my darlings would, but there it is! Are we thinking Hogwarts or Durmstrang?"
Rachelle's features hardened. "I do not want my daighters raised with ridiculous notions of pureblood supremacy. Durmstrang is out of the question." Her husband nodded. "Fair enough, my dear, I thought you'd be saying that. I suppose Hogwarts it is, then!" He smiled.
They heard a happy squeal. "Sissy, look!" Hannah tugged her sister's hand and pointed up, where thousands of gold and green sparks were streaking across the sky. KK shrieked happily and covered her ears, while Hannah and Lucy stood mesmerized. Hannah squealed again and jumped up and down suddenly, then stood silent. Lucy ran over to her father and buried her face in his shirt. "Daddy, why is the sky exploding?! I don't like it.."
Hannah ran over and pulled on her sister's arm. "Lucy, Lucy, Lucyyy! You're missing the lights!" Liam chuckled and propped his daughter up into a sitting position. "Shh, it's alright, lass, they're called fireworks. Aren't they just beautiful?"
Lucy whined. "Why do they have to be so noisy?" Hannah fondly copied her sister's ideals, and added sassily, "Yeah, they can go boom somewhere else!" Rachelle laughed. "Look at that one!" She pointed, and Hannah took the opportunity to duck under her mother's arm and curl up with KK.
The five of them sat and watched the show of lights, silently enjoying their time together.
"Momma?"
"Yes, love?"
"I have to go potty."
