Mr. and Mrs. Oika

Chapter 1

Mr. and Mrs. Oika were not normal, but very far from strange.  Mr. Oika worked at a pharmaceutical company, and Mrs. Oika was a high school social studies teacher.  They had a daughter, named Gale, and another named Julia.  Gale was almost two and had very little personal interaction with her parents.  She went to day care until four PM and then came home, only to be served a can of mashed peas or carrots.   Julia was only a newborn, and was already showing advancements, her mother believed that she was far above the curve, and extremely intelligent.  How a newborn could be proven as intelligent, is still a mystery to this day.

One day, Mr. Oika, or George, left the home to head to work and was having a rather peaceful day, but he felt a sense of alarm two hours to noon.  He asked for his appointments to be held for a moment, and rushed outside, deeply afraid his brand new Mercedes had been scratched.  It hadn’t been, so he was relieved for a moment, but as soon as he headed into his office once again, he received a call.

This call was from his wife, at a police station.  Gale had gotten onto the roof, as a two year old, by herself, and jumped.  Kara, or Mrs. Oika, ran outside to find a rather crumpled looking child, with a bruised head and some cuts to her face, specifically a very deep one near her eye.  It wasn’t like she was passed out or anything, she appeared to be perfectly fine, just playing with some sticks and moss.  After a long scolding, Kara went back inside to the nursery and wrapped the sleeping Julia in a soft blanket, giving her a soft kiss on the forehead and saying to her “Sweet Julia, I am so glad you are not your devilish sister.”

Gale was outside the door, waiting, and certainly listening to every word.

Kara would not find Gale for multiple days, as she was invisible.  Not to mention more angry, sad, and absolutely humiliated than she had ever been in her entire life.

This brings us back to the part where Kara is calling from the police station, and in an irritated tone about how Gale had jumped off the roof and then vanished, the naughty child.  George was very slightly concerned, but more so about the words his wife was speaking.  A two year old? Jumping off the roof?  It was rubbish.  And vanishing into thin air, well that was obviously a fib also.  It didn’t matter, but if the authorities were listening in on the conversation, child protective services had already been called.

They were not, they were not called until a very, very abused looking Gale was found in Kara’s closet two days later.  The gash by her left eye had scabbed over, and the bruises had only gotten worse in terms of looks.  She looked like she hadn’t eaten in days, which she hadn’t, and she was extremely dirty.  After she was found like this, George believed every word of what his wife said.

Gale was taken to the hospital immediately, and Kara was taken to prison immediately to await trial.  Gale’s bruises miraculously healed, nearly instantaneously, and she astonished the doctors.  The only thing that wouldn’t heal is the cut by her eye.  The doctors tried to fix it up, she needed at least five stitches, but every time they tried the needle would either break or the stitches would fall out before they tied the final knot.

Whenever George came to visit her, he would sit in the chair across from her bed with a sullen look, and mumble about how much everything would cost, the lawyers, the hospital bills, the time off work.  It is sometimes hard to remember that this little girl was two, she was as tall as someone double her age, and her eyes were so dark and deep and mature that they were almost black.

Things didn't really get bad until about six months later, when Kara Oika was found guilty.  Their father was extremely distressed, and screamed his head off for around an hour at Gale.  Gale did not know why her mother had been gone, she did not know that it was her fault, she had no idea whatsoever that her father was raging at her for those reasons.

Julia was mostly isolated from Gale, and still loved just as much as she was before “the incident”.  That was what they called it now, it was a lot more like a bucket of incidents.

Gale was six, she spoke very little, only when spoken to.  The only exception was when someone was being a jerk, in which case she would proceed to either kick them, or punch them, all the while spitting all kinds of rude names and words right into their face.  They deserved it.

Her father was called the first couple of times this happened.  The staff listened as George Oiko yelled at Gale how all his problems were his fault, how she was a miserable little human, and all types of other things.  Nobody reported it of course, they knew it would only make it worse for her, and she was physically unharmed.

One day, a teacher or somebody made her stay after school.  It was a boxing class, in the gym.  She never knew why they did it, but it truly did make her life a lot better.  Over the years she tried different types of martial arts, favoring Judo and Jiu Jitsu, with a firm love/hate relationship with wrestling and karate.  As she got older, everybody had no choice but to admit that she was very skilled.  She tried futball, gymnastics, almost everything, for the sole purpouse of getting to stay at school longer and avoid her parents and Julia. Julia was neat, clean, and put together. She never did anything wrong in the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Oika. Anything she did do was blamed on Gale.

One day, when she was ten, she jumped off of the roof again. She was incredibly sick of her parents, her sister, and everything else in life. All she wanted was to be left alone, but she never was. If she survived as a baby, she definately could now, and it would be kind of fun. As she took the step into the abyss, she did not fall, just sort of floated until she reached the ground. She couldn't believe it. There was no wind at all, but she told herself that it had hit her at just the right angle, but she knew this wasn't true. She never told her parents, or Julia, but did the same thing several times afterwards. Or sometimes a kid would try to attack her and they would just lay down on the ground and fall asleap as soon as they came within a foot of her.

She had no idea that it wasn't the wind, or that they weren't sleep deprived at all. She had no idea that it was her that was causing all of theese things to happen. And she definately didn't know that because of this, she would be accepted into the greatest school of all time.
