Chapter 1
My mom lay in her bed, her chest slowly moving up and down. Her face was as pale as a ghost, and her hair was thin and white. She had been sick for almost a week, and could barely even get out of bed. While I watched her, a tear fell from my eye and slithered down my cheek. I walked out to my living room to get a drink of milk to calm my thoughts. Suddenly, I heard a faint scream. I ran into my mom’s bedroom. Her eyes were shut and her chest wasn’t moving up and down. I ran over to her bed, tears falling from my eyes.
“Mom! Wake up! Just fucking wake up!!” I pleaded, tears falling from my eyes and pounding on the floor like rain.
I quickly dialed 911, but I got no answer. My head felt heavy on my body, and I started feeling dizzy. I dialed 911 again; still no answer. Shit. I gently picked my mom up and carried her to her car. She was ice cold and her eyes were shut. My dad wasn’t home, and I was only fourteen, so how was I supposed to drive? I got into the car anyway, and put my mom in the back seat. She was silent. I put the car into drive like I had seen my mom do many times, and pressed my foot down on the gas pedal. Nothing happened. Finally, after five minutes of trying to diagnose the problem, I realized that there was no key in the ignition. I sprinted inside the house, grabbed my mom’s key, and hurried back to my mom’s car. I jammed the key in the ignition, and slammed my foot down on the gas pedal. The car screeched as I backed out from my driveway.
