Chapter 6

"You have only ever seen me amongst the Order, or under Dumbledore's protection at Hogwarts! You don't know how most of the wizarding world sees creatures like me! When they know of my affliction, they can barely talk to me!"

—Werewolf Remus Lupin

A werewolf is categorized as a being and is classified as XXXXX, when they are in their wolf form. They are humans who transform into a wolf when the full moon rises. While in wolf form, they are extremely deadly. This condition is known as lycanthropy. The person afflicted has no control over the transformation. Once the transformation is complete, they will no longer have a memory of who they are until the moon sets and they return to their human form. Despite losing their memory while being a wolf, they will be able to recall everything that happened the night before once they are human again.

Appearance

Human

Similar to a wolf, however, they have a shorter snout and human like eyes.

Fur color varies

Diet

Varies with human form

Raw meat and animals when in wolf form

Habitat

As they are humans, they live as humans do. Their habitat varies with location and culture.

While in wolf form, they may sleep outside on the ground.

Defence

  • Many lycanthropes use a Wolfsbane Potion during the week of the full moon.

  • Despite popular belief, silver has no effect on werewolves and should never be used as a defence.

  • Various spells such as the Knockback Jinx.

Treatment

There is no known cure for lycanthropy, however, certain effects are capable of being mitigated. This is accomplished by consuming the Wolfsbane Potion. Many have stated that they find that the transformation is more bearable if they are able to have an animal companion during that time. They pose no threat to animals, so this is perfectly safe.

Known Werewolves

Fenrir Greyback

Bill Weasley- Attacked by Fenrir Greyback while he was in human form. Although Bill did not develop lycanthropy, he did develop a few lupine tendencies such as a new liking for rare steak.
