Professor Lucrezia Batyaeva-Rubedo
Chapter 5
Personal Particulars
Name: Lucrezia Mikhailovna Batyaeva-Rubedo
House: Gryffindor
Age: 32
Course: Potions
Place of Birth: Reinweiler, Austria, which is a small magical enclave in the suburbs of Vienna.
Family Background
Parents: Ekaterina Ionnovna Batyaeva (née Solovieva) and Mikhail Grigoriyof Batyaev
Parents Background: Ekaterina Ionnovna and Mikhail Grigoriyof were born and raised in middle to upper-middle class magical families in Siberia, Russia. Ekaterina has one sister and Mikhail one brother.
Ekaterina is a distant relative of the well-known Russian sorcerer Grigori Rasputin, although they do not speak often of that side of the family. Most of Ekaterina's family comes from the far eastern oblasts and Kyrgyzstan.
Mikhail comes from from an old Molokan family. Molokans derived from the “Spiritual Christian” Russian peasants who refused to obey the teachings of the Russian Orthodoxy, and their name connotes “milk-drinkers,” referring to their refusal to abide by the regulations of the Orthodox fasting days. Molokans have occasionally been compared to Quakers for their promotion of pacifism and strong community ties, and as such the Batyaeva family has always been in favor of Wizard and Muggle harmony and peace. Mikhail Batyaeva’s family has lived in Siberia for as far back as the Ministry records show.
Ekaterina and Mikhail met when they were both studying at Akademiya Belzaly, a small, private magical school in Omsk Oblast in Western Siberia.
Parents Career: Following their education, they moved to Samara, Russia, which is where Mikhail was raised. He worked there as an investigative journalist and occasional fiction writer, while Ekaterina worked as a professional magical artist. In 1977, Mikhail was offered a position as senior editor with the Austrian national wizarding newspaper. At that time, they moved to Reinweiler, where they still lived when Lucrezia was born in 1982.
They lived a relatively comfortable upper-middle class life on the outskirts of Vienna, and were relatively liberal in their treatment of their daughter growing up. They would allow Lucrezia to occasionally to into Vienna on her own when she was little, and she was often found in Muggle music stores or cafés even as a teenager. They were strong proponents of Muggle and Magical cooperation and the need to understand one another in order to better society as a whole.
Relationship with Parents: Given the free-spirited nature of Lucrezia's parents, she got along well with them, and remained close even after graduation. Her desire to live relatively close to her parents brought her back to the Vienna region following her own graduation from Belzaly.
Family Wealth: Average
Family Struggles: As Ekaterina and Mikhail's families lived in a relatively remote region of Russia - one also tied greatly with older religion and old Russian mysticism - they did not face the struggles that many in Europe and the United States witnessed when dealing with Muggle reactions to magic. It was easy to remain withdrawn from society if preferred.
The only brush with disaster came from Ekaterina's relative, Grigori Rasputin. Following his eventual death, a few others of Ekaterina's distant family stood trial with the Russian Ministry for questionable practices and treatment of Muggles, breaking the Statute of Secrecy, and questionable use of Darker Magic. They were not convicted, however, and have mostly withdrawn from society.
Planned child: Yes
Interesting Info: Lucrezia was a planned child. Although Mikhail and Ekaterina were married for eight years before Lucrezia was born, they both wanted to have the opportunity to live and develop their careers before having a child. After Lucrezia was born, Mikhail wanted to have one more child, but Ekaterina preferred to spend time focusing on her own career as an artist.
Educational Background
Place of Study: Standard education: Академия Белзалы (Akademiya Belzaly) (1993-2000); Graduate studies and research: Salem Institute for Witches (2001-2004)
Likes: Lucrezia was always fond of Muggle music and exploring Muggle institutions. She used to spend a good deal of time as a child sitting in cafés people-watching in Vienna. She always enjoyed a good cup of coffee and, unlike many children, always loved vegetables.
Dislikes: She did not deal well with needless bureaucracy, and was known to question authority in school. She got into a bit of trouble for constantly asking for a reasoning behind certain regulations or rules - institutional, natural, and magical.
Worst Prank: During her last two years at Belzaly, she did manage to sneak out with a few friends to travel into the city of Omsk, near the school, to attend Muggle parties and musical events. She never got caught, although she does caution young people against similar behavior.
Childhood Best Friend: Lucrezia's childhood best friend was her cousin, Tansilu Altanovna Kolchaka. They spent every summer together growing up, and they are still close friends. Tansilu lives in St. Petersburg with her two sons now, and Lucrezia often visits them for holidays and vacation.
Behaviour in School: During her time at Akademiya Belzaly, Lucrezia was very gregarious, occasionally to the detriment of her studies, she recalls. She enjoyed meeting new people and getting to know their differing experiences and perceptions. Occasionally parties and other gatherings would take precedence over her studies, although she still graduated with very good grades.
Relationships
First Relationship: Lucrezia's first relationship was with Jasmijna Petrova, a student one year older than she was at Belzaly. The two started dating when Lucrezia was sixteen and Jasmijna seventeen. The relationship lasted for two years: unfortunately the women were not able to maintain the relationship when Lucrezia moved back to Austria.
Marital Status: Married
How he/she met his/her spouse: Lucrezia and August Rubedo first met at a charity event in France back in 2009. They only briefly exchanged conversation then, and it was not until July, 2014 when Lucrezia arrived at Hogwarts that the two reconnected. They eloped September 1, 2014.
Children: No (However, they do have a black cat named Sandman as well as August's two kneazles.)
Career
Job before becoming a Professor in Hogwarts: Junior Research Lead and Teacher's Aide at the Österreichische Institut für Fortschritt in der Zaubertränke
When graduated from Hogwarts: Akademiya Belzaly in 2000
How he/she became a Professor: Lucrezia was an old colleague and acquaintance of Astronomy Professor and Hufflepuff Head of House Dax Polgara owing to both of their time in the Boston, Massachusetts area studying at Muggle institutions. When the position opened, Professor Polgara contacted Lucrezia and offered her the position. She had never before taught in the English language or taught such a young age group, but she was convinced that, as she was allowed to continue research work and attend meetings and conferences, it would be a good career move for her.
Why the course: Initially Lucrezia studied Structural Dynamics (essentially Transfiguration) at Belzaly. However, upon her return to Vienna, Austria, she quickly became acquainted with many young, progressive, dynamic students involved with the potions revolution and development of new research methods. She slowly shifted her focus from a structurally-oriented study of theoretical magic to one that looked into the impact of energy and particles on one another, as well as the functioning of natural and scientific laws in association with magic and mundane ingredients and elements.
Interesting Information about Career: For a brief time following her graduation from Akademiya Belzaly, Lucrezia Mikhailovna considered going into show business. She entered Miss Großraum Reinweiler on a whim in 1999 and on the advice of some of her local childhood friends, and managed to win Magische Österreich, although she advanced no further. However, she soon decided to pursue more scientific studies. She has also won the following professional awards:
- Die Kollerin Jugendpreis für Zaubertränke in 2001, given to creative and innovative young potioneers in German-speaking regions (including Austria, Germany, and Switzerland).
- Salem-Bishop Award for Potions Mastery in 2005 for her continued post-graduation studies at the Salem Institute for Witches while studying at Boston College.
- Der Wandlight Preis in 2011, which is a relatively new prize given to witches and wizards under 35 from any nation, presented by the German Ministry. Only one witch or wizard who is perceived by the German Ministry as a "rising star" in magical research wins it each year.
Lucrezia has also been published numerous times for her research work, including her specialized independent research in transitional ingredients across all categories.
