Chapter 1
Hey! If you’re reading this then you need help with The Care Of Magical Creatures class. Well, you are in the right place! I am writing this book at my own pace, going over each lesson in The Care Of Magical Creatures class. DO NOTE THAT THINGS IN BOLD ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE 10 QUESTION QUIZ AND SHORT ESSAY! Now before we begin, let’s start with the basics! In the Care Of Magical Creatures class, you start to talk about the expectations of the class itself. So that’s where we shall start!
The Expectations of The Class
Now in this class, Professor Elizabeth Anne starts with her expectations and we shall go over the first, to get a feel of what we will be talking about. The class itself won’t have many assignments, yet we have to think quite a lot. In most classes here at Hogwarts, we have a set textbook that is required but for this class, we don’t. Yet in the library, many different books have extra lessons and well I won’t be getting into them in this book.
The Assignments & Essays
In the class, there are multiple assignments and progress checks within the class. Some are short essays with 300 words or less to flash assignments. In the class, there are multiple lessons and quizzes, and essays that have to do with that lesson. And the answers are in the lesson, but you have to dig them out, which can be hard. Now to be quite honest, it’s not too hard doing these assignments. But that’s up to you to judge if they are.
The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
The very first lesson kicks off by talking about the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. And this is what I am interested in! For those who don’t know this department recognizes and protects our magical creatures in the wizarding world. The department itself enforces the creature law, gives license to applicants, handles complaints about creatures being abused, and maintains the 2 different forms of creature classification. Now it's VERY important to know that magizoology is the study of magical creatures. The very first form of the creature’s classification is the three divisions. These three divisions are beast, being, and spirit. Every creature that is recognized by the department is placed into one of these groups. Now a beast is a magical creature that does not have the intelligence to cooperate and understand magical law, nor can it help shape these laws in any way. While a being is any creature that has enough intelligence to understand and cooperate with magical law, and can potentially help shape it, meaning helps it develop. Now, normally creatures that can talk like normal human speech are in this group. Merpeople and centaurs should be classified as beings; however, they refuse to be grouped with creatures like vampires, so they are beasts. The Being Division is the most confusing of the three simply because not every creature that should be placed in this group is. Lastly, spirits are beings that have passed on, meaning they are ghosts and have died. Because they can no longer contribute to magical law (meaning help develop), they are then placed into the spirit category. While spirits can still speak and communicate with the wizarding world, they are not directly affected by the laws in place, so they are not permitted to contribute to the development of said laws. They are allowed to sit in on any hearings and depending on the nature of the hearing provide insight, but that is the extent of involvement they are allowed to have. Like at Hogwarts, some ghosts would be classified in the spirit classification.
Now the Ministry of Magic created a scale to help show the dangers of certain creatures. However, this scale is used only for the classification of beats. The scale is below. Now I think it’s funny that it is boring on the scale, how rude is it to call a poor creature boring?
X - Boring
XX - Harmless, maybe domesticated
XXX - Competent wizard should cope
XXXX - Dangerous, requires specialist knowledge, a skilled wizard may handle
XXXXX - Known wizard killer, impossible to train or domesticate
Anyways back to what we were talking about, this classification is VERY helpful when learning how to care for the creature and about even owning it. This system also helps determine which creatures require licenses, what kind of substances they produce, and the urgency of any matters regarding the creature at hand.
As before I had talked about the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures is home to three different divisions in which creatures are placed. Under each of these divisions are various offices and committees. I would write these down since they are important to know.
Under the Beast Division, there is:
The Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures
The Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau
The Ghoul Task Force
The Werewolf Capture Unit
The Werewolf Registry and Register
Under the Being Division, there is:
The Office for House-Elf Relocation
Werewolf Support Services
The Spirit Division is a single office.
Also under the department, under no specific group, are:
The Goblin Liaison Board
The Centaur Liaison Board
The Pest Advisory Board
The Office of Misinformation
Now in 1965, was the year that the Ministry of Magic had banned experimental breeding. Which personally was very big and also I’m glad that they had banned that. It has caused harm to creatures but also isn’t very good for the world either. The definition of a beast was laid down by Minister for Magic Grogan Stump in 1811, and the Beast Division was formed as part of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
The Most Significant Magizoologist in History
I’m not going into much detail about this significant Magizoologist, hence you should already know quite a bit about him. We should thank Newt Scamander, a great deal for his contributions to the study of magizoology as well as the discovery of creatures like thunderbirds and his ability to bring creatures back from the brink of extinction. Some of his legal contributions include the creation of the Werewolf Register in 1947 and the Ban on Experimental Breeding in 1965. This ban prevents the creation and breeding of new creatures in Britain, which in turn prevents these creatures from creating a spectacle for Muggles to see. His famous book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, now in its 53rd edition, is a great resource for this class and any creature enthusiast.
Closing
And that’s it for your first lesson! There is a ten-question quiz and short essay to complete within this lesson. Make sure to take your time and read through all questions carefully. In the next lesson, I will begin to discuss all: the creatures. I cannot wait for the next lesson cya!
